Renew Your IP Address

If you've ever experienced internet connection problems, you may have heard a technical support
representative for your internet service provider state that you need to renew your IP address. If
you do not feel like sitting on the phone for 20 minutes waiting on the phone to have someone
tell you to renew your IP address again after your internet connection goes dead again, try
renewing your IP address on your own. It will save time and frustration and will help you trouble
shoot your own connection problems.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Open the command prompt . On the start up menu in the bottom left hand corner, click
on the "Run" option in the menu. Type "cmd" (no quotes) in the Open field and press
enter. (See Illustration) If you do not see the "Run" option, you can also find the
command prompt by going to Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).

2. Step 2

View the current ip address. In the command prompt window, type the word "ipconfig"
(no quotes). Your current ip address, subnet mask, and other information will display.
3. Step 3

Next, type "ipconfig /release" (no quotes). This process sets the ipconfig to all 0s.

4. Step 4

Now, type "ipconfig /renew" (no quotes). This process resets the numbers.

5. Step 5

Exit the Command Prompt by typing "exit" (no quotes). Your IP address is now renewed.

ipconfig and the /release.
To renew the IP address from the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig /renew". Note that there is a space
between ipconfig and the /renew.

How To Release and/or Renew IP
Addresses on Windows XP | 2000 | NT
Follow these steps to quickly release and/or renew the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer
running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: seconds

Here's How:

1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.

2. Click Run... on this menu.

3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box
that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.

4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).

5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a
current address).

Tips:

1. If it is not necessary to view the current IP addresses on a computer, simply type 'ipconfig
/release' or 'ipconfig /renew' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears in Step 3.

2. To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or
experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on

error. You check your modem and everything seems to be working and now you decide to call
customer service--what a hassle. Often, the problem is that you need to renew your computer's
Internet Protocol (IP) address. These steps explain how to renew your IP address and hopefully
save you a call to customer service.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

1. Step 1

Click on the "Start" button and choose "Run."

2. Step 2

Type "cmd" in the box and click on "OK." A window with a command prompt appears.
It resembles the old DOS operating system.

3. Step 3

Type "ipconfig /release" and press "Enter." This releases your computers current IP
addresses.

4. Step 4

Type "ipconfig /renew" and press "Enter." This assigns your computer a new set of IP
addresses.

5. Step 5

Type "Exit" and press "Enter" to close the window. You computer now has a new IP
address.

Ti ps & Warnings

 If the above steps don't resolve your connectivity issue, try unplugging your modem
and/or router for a few seconds and then repeat the process.
 The command "ipconfig" reveals the IP address assigned to your computer. If you have
more than one connection to your computer (i.e. having both a wireless and LAN
network card) the command "ipconfig /all" reveals all your assigned IP addresses.
