1 The paper is based on two background papers that were prepared for the ECB workshop on economic and financial developments in Mediterranean countries held in Frankfurt on 2 and 3 November 2009. It has benefited from the comments of François Gurtner,Thierry Bracke and Frank Moss and from comments made by representatives of central banks of the Eurosystem and of Mediterranean countries during the workshop. Research assistance was provided by Livia Chitu.2 ECB, Directorate General International and European Relations.
In 2010 all ECB publicationsfeature a motif taken from the €500 banknote.
