HaroldHoffmanhasthroughhis30plusyearsofexperienceasaGunsmith,ToolmakerandCustomKnifemakerhaspassedontoyouthroughhisbooksinformationthatsoonmaybelostorforgotten.Hisbooksarenotintendedforthepersonwantingtomakeacompletefirearm,butforlearningbasicshoptoolmaking.Theinformationfoundwithinhisbooksisforinstructionalpurposeonly.--ThetitlesDONOTactualcovergunrepaironfirearms,buthowtomakeneededpartsforfirearmswhichisabout40%ofallgunrepair.Withoutthisinformationyouwillbeseverelylimitedingunrepair.Hefirststartedgunrepairwhenhewas18yearsolddoingminorrepairforthefarmersandlocalhuntersintheBucklin,Kansasarea.Hismaininterestwashowtomakeriflebarrels,ashewasanavidhunter.Movingintoabiggershopheboughtalatheandproceededtolearnhowtouseit.Hewantedtofindouthowtomakeriflingbuttonstoriflebarrels,toolmaking,andlearneverythingaboutmakingbarrels.Overtheyearshebecameanexperttoolmakerandhowtobuildmosteverythingthatwasneededintheshop.Theinformationfoundinhisbookswillshowyouhowtomakemostoftheequipmentandtoolsneededinmostshops.AfteraneyeaccidenthequitGunsmithingandstartedwritingbooksoneverythingthatheknew.Hehadsomuchdifficultyfindinganyinformationthathewantedallthisinformationthathehadlearnedinover30yearstobeavailabletoeveryoneotherwiseitwouldbelost.HisbooksarenowabouttheonlybooksavailableonGunsmithing/Toolmaking,asmostpublishersdonotpublishGunorGunsmithingbooksanymore.

Thefollowingisageneralsummaryofthecrossbowstock,partsandhowweconstructit.Inthefollowingchapters,wewillgointomuchmoredetailonitsconstruction,andwilldescribeseveraldifferenttypesofcrossbowsthatyoucanbuild.Youcanmakethestockofyourcrossbowinwhateverstyleyouprefer.Forgoodshooting,wemustadaptthegunstocktotheindividual,andyouwillfindthatastockmadetoyourmeasurementswillenableyoutoshootfarmoreaccurately.Whattolookforingoodweapondesignis;1.Balance,whichwecanachieveonlybytrialanderror.2.Simplicityofline,whichmeansriddingthesurfaceofeveryirregularknob,joints,levers,andunsightlyangles.3.Accuracyinshooting,whichwecanchangebythekindofstockused,thegroovetheboltrunsin,theangleatwhichweattachtheprodtothestock,andthesize,weightsandfletchingofthebolts.Whenyoubuildacrossbow,themostimportantconsiderationistohaveaperfectlystraightgroovealongwhichtheboltwilltravel.Anycurveorirregularityinthisgroovewillcauseinaccuracybecausetheboltwillbetravelingatupto200mphandwillhitanycurvewithgreatforceanddeflectthearrow.Frictionwillreducetherangeofthebolt,sobesidesbeingstraight,thegroovemustalsobesmoothandpolished.Thedepthandwidthofthegroovewillgovernthetypeofboltandtheheightofthefletchingthatweuseonthearrow.Youcanadaptthedesignsshowninotherchapterstoyourlengthofarmandfacecontour.Youwillseethatthecombofsomestockiscomparativelyflat,butyoucanraiseorloweritbeforeyoucutoutthewood.Layoutthepatternonacardboardblanktocheckonthewaythedesignwillfityourfaceandarms.Fromthis,youcanmakewhateveradjustmentsarenecessaryforyourcomfortandeaseofbothholdingandaiming.Ifthestockiswood,thebestwayofensuringthatitstaysstraightistomakeitofthreelaminationsfromhardwood.Youmuststartwithagoodbasefortheweaponbyusingonlywell-seasonedandlaminatedwood.Youalsocanusethree,3/8hardwoodboardsthatyoulaminatetogether.Ifabandsawisnotavailable,thenyoucaneasilyshapethe3/8-inchboardswithacopingorsabersawbeforeyouglueittogether.Youcanleavethecenterboardblankandformtheopeningforthetrigger
