Bolton Abbey
was founded in
1151 by the
Augustinian
order, and is
set on the
banks of the
River Wharfe.
The beautiful
setting has
been
immortalised in both in art and poetry, including a
painting by Edwin Landseer and watercolours by
JMW Turner.
Skipton is famous for its market. The Castle is over
900 years old and is one of the most complete and
well preserved medieval castles in England, including
a beautiful early Tudor courtyard.
Grassington is centred around a small cobbled
square with a selection of shops offering food,
clothing and gifts, alongside small cafes and
restaurants. Upper Wharfedale Folk Museum
provides reminders of yesteryear including exhibits
of lead mining, craft tools, Dales farming, period
costumes and folklore.

This year marks the 1600th anniversary of the Roman
legions leaving Britain in 410AD. We start off by
visiting Brampton. St Martin’s Church is famous as
the only church designed by the Pre-Raphaelite
architect Philip Webb, and contains one of the most
exquisite sets of stained glass windows designed by
Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and executed in the
William Morris studio.
At Birdoswald Fort (EH) not
only can a Roman fort,
turret and milecastle all be
seen, but to the east, the
longest continuous stretch
of Wall visible today. The
Visitor Centre has
interesting displays and reconstructions, tracing the
history of the Wall via audiovisuals, strikingly life-like
figures and excavated artefacts: these also tell the
intriguing story of Birdoswald and its people over
the past 2,000 years.
The Roman army appears to have occupied the site
of Vindolanda around AD 85. The fort guarded the
central section of the vital east to west supply
route, known now as the Stanegate, and when the
Wall was built some 40 year later, Vindolanda took its
place between Housesteads and Great Chesters as a
Wall fort. The Museum, in the valley just to the east
of the site of the stone fort holds a vast range of
leather goods, textiles, wooden objects, bronze and
iron objects. But the most highly prized of all are the
slivers of wood, covered in spidery ink writing - the
official and private correspondence of the men and
women who lived at Vindolanda nearly 2000 years ago.
Cartmel and
Holker Hall

We stop off at Morecombe for morning coffee,
before moving on to Cartmel for lunch. The ancient
village of Cartmel is famous for the 12th Century
Cartmel Priory, with its beautiful stained glass
windows, modern sculptures, and ancient choir
stalls. Leading off the village square, with its market
cross, water pump, and fish slabs, is the Cartmel Priory
Gatehouse, now a Heritage Centre which depicts the
history of the monastery, and the village.
After lunch we move on to Holker Hall.
throughout its 400 year history, it is the family home
of Lord and Lady Cavendish. It is a delightful family
home with fine displays of antique furniture and art.
Holker Hall is the finest house in South Lakeland.
The architectural interest of the house is almost all
Victorian, a replacement after a fire in 1871. The
gardens were winners of Christies/HHA Garden of
the Year in 1991, and voted ‘amongst the best in the
world’ by the Good Gardens Guide, 1996. The
pleasure grounds cover 25 acres of formal and
woodland gardens, with majestic water features
including the limestone cascade.
Llangollen and
Chirk Castle

We spend the morning in Llangollen, with a wide
variety of attractions to choose from. Plas Newydd
was the home of Ladies of Llangollen, Lady Eleanor
Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby. They became
celebrated throughout the country as the story of
their relationship spread through Regency Society.
The house retains the Gothic features they
introduced. There are 45 mins horse-drawn canal
trips along the Llangollen Canal. The Llangollen Steam
Railway also has a special Thomas The Tank Engine
weekend on, with 1 hour return trips to Carrog.
After lunch we move on to Chirk Castle (NT).
Completed in 1310, Chirk is the last Welsh castle from
the reign of Edward I still lived in today. Features from
its 700 years include the medieval tower and dungeon,
17th-century Long Gallery, grand 18th-century state
apartments, servants’ hall and historic laundry. The
award-winning gardens
contain clipped yews,
herbaceous borders,
shrub and rock
gardens. A terrace with
stunning views looks
out over the Cheshire
and Salop plains.
Steaming in the perched high above the River Nidd with suberb
views of both Knaresborough and the river valley.
