August 15, 2010Dear Master Gardener Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the Albuquerque Area Extension Master Gardener Program. The New Mexico State University program trains persons to be volunteers assisting the Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service in responding to community horticulture questions. This program is not only an advanced gardening class; it is a training session designed to prepare volunteers tobe able to provide area residents with up-to-date horticultural information provided by New Mexico State University. To become a Master Gardener Volunteer, you will be required to attend 48 hours of training classes and to complete 40 hours o volunteer work by October 31, 2011; 20 of those hours must be served staffing the Master Gardener Hotline (this applies to allMaster Gardener Volunteers with less than 6 years of service). The once-a-week classes will begin on January 11, 2011, and will meetevery Tuesday. Required classes for new trainees are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. until noon, with optional advanced classes starting at1:00 p.m. The fee for this training is $150.00; Master Gardener Volunteer status will be awarded in October to those who havecompleted all the training and performed the required volunteer service. At that time, $40 will be refunded to those same people, and$10 will be credited to their annual dues for the coming year. In this way, the actual fee for successful candidates is $100.Some may wish to take the training but not perform the volunteer work. In that case, the fee is a flat $150.00, and those persons willnot receive the title of Master Gardener Volunteer. Persons in the green industry may wish to take this training option. A word of caution
 –
seating for this option will be limited based on the demand from Master Gardener trainees, who have preference foravailable seating. Finally, any interested person may attend on a class-by-class basis, for a $10 per class fee. There are three classes per training day. Noadvance notice is required, just walk in and pay; again, seating is not guaranteed. Applications will be received between August 15, 2010, and November 12, 2010 with the appropriate fee. For more information, contact Cheryl Rosel, Extension Horticulture Agent with Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service, at 243-1386.Sincerely,
