Senior Expo Set for Oct. 13
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Oct. 13, as my 10
th
annual Senior Expo will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St.John’s Parish Center in Girard.If you’ve been to this event in the past, then you know you’ll be able to find a wealth of information about a variety of publicand private programs and services – all designed to enhance your quality of life. From financial planning, nutrition and healthyliving to assistance for prescription medications and energy bills, the expo will feature more than 80 different exhibitors – all under one roof. Door prizes and refreshments will be available.The expo is targeted specifically for those residents age 65 and older in the 5
th
Legislative District, but families and caregiversof senior citizens are also encouraged to attend. As a special reminder, flu shots will also be offered. Most vaccinations will becovered under Medicare Part B or other private insurance plans. Local Senior Citizens Benefit from Millions in PA Lottery Proceeds
More than $38 million in proceeds from the Pennsylvania Lottery provided benefits to the senior citizens in Erieand Crawford counties during the 2008-09 fiscal year, according to a report recently released by the PennsylvaniaDepartments of Revenue and Aging.Since 1971, the proceeds from the Pennsylvania Lottery have benefited programs specifically geared towardsenior citizens. Of those are the 52 Area Agencies on Aging and more than 600 full- and part-time senior centers,the PACE and PACENET prescription drug coverage programs, shared and free rides, and the Property Tax/RentRebate program.Locally, seniors in Crawford County benefited from more than $9.5 million in services. The breakdown in-cludes:
 
Active Aging Inc. (Area Agency on Aging) and affiliated senior centers -- $1.89 million.
 
PACE and PACENET -- $2.2 million.
 
Shared and Free Ride Program -- $416,000.
 
Property Tax and Rent Rebates -- $2.9 million.
 
Long-term living services through the Department of Public Welfare -- $2.1 million.In addition, more than $8 million in lottery prizes were awarded to residents of Crawford County, and $36.6 mil-lion for Erie County residents.In Erie County, nearly $28.6 million in lottery proceeds benefited senior citizens there, including:
 
Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) and local senior centers -- $4.58 million.
 
PACE and PACENET -- $6.43 million.
 
Shared and Free Ride Program -- $1.4 million.
 
Property Tax and Rent Rebates -- $7.3 million.
 
Long-term living services -- $8.9 million.The Pennsylvania Lottery is unique in that it remains the only lottery in the nation that exclusively targets all of its proceeds to programs for older residents.
