Before you get started here are some suggestions for getting the most from the refilling process while maintaining a clean, usable work area.1.Work close to or over a sink. Wear gloves.2.Place an adequate amount of newspaper over your work area and have several paper towels. When handling cartridge make sure you do not touch the contact points or print head. This can damage the cartridge.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR REFILLING CANON CL-41 CL-51 CL-52 CARTRIDGES
For best performance it is recommended that you refill prior to running out of ink.Damage to the print heads could result from running a dry cartridge.
There are two methods to refilling these Canon ink jet cartridges. The first method allows you to refill without removing the cap of the cartridge. Thesecond method has you remove the cap completely so that you can see the internal sponge material. Read through both instructions to determine whichbest suits your needs.
NOTE: The CL-41 refill process is the same as CL-51.
When removing cartridge from printermake sure not to touch the contactpoints or print head of cartridge.1. Remove cartridge from printer andrest on a secure non-static surface.2. Remove top label. The easiest wayto remove the top label is to take a boxcutter or similar style razor (Exacto asan example) and wedge underneathlabel to raise the top corner.3. Peel back the label until it iscompletely off the cartridge. This will expose the vent holes of thecartridge.4. Take twist tool (eyelet screw)and enlarge the cartridge vent holes. The eyelet screw which is included withthis refill kit is an excellent size for a20g blunt needle.5. Locate the color to refill. Take injectorand attach blunt needle to injector. Fillinjector with desired amount of ink (SeeChart #1 below for details)When you are done wait 5 minutes toallow cartridge to settle. Put back intoprinter and wait for cartridge recognitionto finish. Print a nozzle checkimmediately to see if all jets are firingproperly.6. Insert needle into vent hole down intocartridge sponge material. Do not insertall the way into the cartridge. Note onthe image to the right that there isadequate room for air to get out of thecartridge on the side of the needle.Slowly inject ink into cartridge. Theslower the better. As soon as you see any ink comingfrom the fill hole stop injecting ink.7. Repeat process with remainingcolors.Note: It is not required to replace thetop label of the cartridge. It is actuallybeneficial to have the top label off thecartridge as this prevents blocking theair vent at the top of the cartridge.
REFILLING WITH CAP ONREFILLING WITH CAP OFF
Refill quantities The refill quantities are not exact. This is due to the fact that therewill not be equal amounts of ink left in the cartridge every time you refill. As anexample if you were to print a great deal of green logos you would have less Cyanand Yellow then Magenta. The amounts were the average amounts filled on 6consecutive refills refilling 6 different cartridges (3 #51 cartridges and 3 #52cartridges) for a total of 36 complete cartridge refills. (1ml = 1cc)

This method of refilling requires cap of thecartridge to be removed. This method isideal for getting a more exacting refill. Byseeing into the cartridge you know exactlywhen the sponge has hit saturation point.1. Remove cartridge from printer andplace on its side with cap facing towardsyou.2 . Take a knife or similar object and placebetween the cap of the cartridge (gray)and the base of the cartridge (black).Gently tap with a hammer. This willseparate the cap from the base.Start by tapping in the corner and thenmoving to the center of the cartridge. When cartridge cap appears to haveseparated on one side turn cartridge onopposite side and repeat.3. Once the cap has been removed fromthe cartridge you are ready to refill.4. Attach needle to injector and fill with3cc of desired color ink.5. Insert needle into sponge material andbegin to slowly inject ink. The slower thebetter.
Tip:
Tilting cartridge slightly away fromthe other colors will prevent crosscontamination.7. As soon as ink begins to appear toseep to the top of the sponge materialstop filling.8. Repeat for other colors.Compare the image on the upper rightlabeled 41 51 to the image on the right. Inthe image labeled 41 51 the Cyan hasalready been filled and ink has come tothe top of the sponge material.Do not saturate sponge to a point wherethere is a pool of ink at the top of thesponge. A proper fill has the ink coming just to the top of the sponge.Once refilled do not lay cartridge on itsside. If you have removed the top label makesure NOT to completely cover the fillholes of the cartridge when taping the top.The cartridge needs to vent. Air must getin for ink to get out.If cartridge contains its original label makesure you do not cover the vent on the topof the cartridge. The white circle outlinesthe vent.
When you are done wait 5 minutes toallow cartridge to settle. Put back intoyour printer and wait for cartridgerecognition to finish. You can print anozzle check immediately to see if all jetsare firing properly.
