PREFACE
This volume is the fruit of an instructional conference on algebraic numbertheory, held from September 1st to September 17th, l-965, in the Universityof Sussex, Brighton. It was organized by the London Mathematical Societyunder the auspices and with the generous financial aid of the InternationalMathematical Union and of the Advanced Study Programme of NATO.The organizers of the conference owe a great deal to the constant supportwhich they received from the authorities of the host University. All the lectures held during the conference are recorded here with theexception of a few informal seminars. The drafts for publication were eithersupplied by the speakers themselves, or were prepared by members of theconference in collaboration with the lecturers. We wish to express our deepgratitude to the lecturers both for ensuring the success of the meeting itself,as well as for enabling us subsequently to publish this volume. We are noless grateful to the “note-takers” for their co-operation. Both they and thelecturers also assisted in the proof correction. The editors must emphasize, however, that neither the lecturers nor the note-takers have any responsibilityfor any inaccuracies which may remain: they are an act of God.Apart from accounts of the lectures this volume also contains exercisescompiled by Tate with Serre’s help, and above all Tate’s doctoral thesis, which is for the first time published here after it had over many years had adeep influence on the subject as a piece of clandestine literature. Finally we wish to express our appreciation for the co-operation which wereceived from our publishers.January 1967J.
