O Lord, Psalm 139 sings,“I I sink down to the netherworld,Or go to the urthermost limits o the sea,You are there, holding me in your right hand.” Tat you always securely hold me in your hand Daily strengthens me here at Cherith Brook. IF I welcome someone whose ragged clothesSmellourine, hisbreathoalcohol, youarethere. I I eed a brooding stranger who is ungrateul,Complains about the ood, you are there. I I go to clean the toilets, dirty showers,Or any unpleasant task, you are there. When a companion in our house is rude, And their conduct irritates me, In him or her, you are there. When we gather or communal prayer, And I, not eeling prayerul, only pretend,You are there, holding me in your hand. When I eel no joy in helping others,Harbor judgments against those I serve,Even then, you are there.Cradled in your hand, let your ngersCreatively knead me to greatness, As they once did your son Jesus,O Lord, may my time at Cherith Brook,Serving the needs o the poorPrepare me in unexpected waysFor what’s next or me in my lie,Condent, you’ll be there. Amen. As catholic workers, we believe that personal and social transormation should be pursued by themeans Jesus revealed in His sacricial love. WithChrist as our Exemplar, by prayer and communionwith His Body and Blood, we strive or the practiceo Nonviolence.“Blessed are the peacemakers, or they shall becalled children o God.” (Matt. 5:9) Only throughnonviolent action can a personalist revolution comeabout, one in which one evil will not be replaced simply by another. Tus, we oppose the deliberatetaking o human lie or any reason, and see everyoppression as blasphemy. Jesus taught us to takesuering upon ourselves rather than infict it uponothers, and He calls us to ght against violencewith the spiritual weapons o prayer, asting and noncooperation with evil. Reusal to pay taxes orwar, to register or conscription, to comply withany unjust legislation; participation in nonviolentstrikes and boycotts, protests or vigils; withdrawalo support or dominant systems, corporate unding or usurious practices are all excellent means toestablish peace.

By making our military a league o heroes, weensure that the brutalizing aspects and eects o war will be played down. In celebrating isolated heroic eats, we oten orget that war is guaranteed to degrade humanity.“By making our military heroic, we act to prolong our wars. By seeing war as essentially heroic the-ater, we esteem it even as we excuse it.“By insisting programmatically on Americanmilitary heroism, we also lay a rm oundation or potentially dangerous post-war myths, especiallyo the blame-mongering variety. “Are we seeking power or power’s sake? Or are we seeking to makethe world and our nation better places to live? I we seek the latter, violence can never provide theanswer. Te ultimate weakness o violence is thatit is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead o diminishing evil, itmultiplies it.”

“I sometimes marvel at those who askme why I am speaking against the war. Could itbe that they do not know that the Good News wasmeant or all - or communist and capitalist, ortheir children and ours, or black and or white, orrevolutionary and conservative? Have they orgot-ten that my ministry is in obedience to the one wholoved his enemies so ully that he died or them?”
