Holy Bible
About the
Amplified Version
The Amplified New Testament was published by the Lockman Foundationand Zondervan Publishing House in 1958, with the Old Testament in twoparts in 1962 and 1964. The entire Amplified Bible was first published in 1965. In its quest to make the Bible understandable to contemporary readers, thetranslators chose to use a system of amplification to reveal any shades of meaning that might exist. The translators felt that amplification would help thereader comprehend what the Hebrew or Greek listener understood. The symbols used for the types of amplification are: Parentheses and dashes, which signify additional phases of meaningincluded in the original word, phrase, or clause of the original language. Commas are used to set off titles of Deity. Brackets contain justified clarifying words or comments not actuallyexpressed in the original text. Italics point out familiar passages now recognized as not adequatelysupported by the original manuscripts.

IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created theheavens and the earth.
The earth was without form and anempty waste, and darkness was uponthe face of the very great deep. TheSpirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light; andthere was light.
And God saw that the light was good(suitable, pleasant) and He approved it;and God separated the light from thedarkness.
And God called the light Day, and thedarkness He called Night. And therewas evening and there was morning, one day.
And God said, Let there be a firmament[the expanse of the sky] in the midst of the waters, and let it separate thewaters [below] from the waters [above].
And God made the firmament [theexpanse] and separated the waterswhich were under the expanse from thewaters which were above the expanse. And it was so.
And God called the firmament Heavens. And there was evening and there wasmorning, a second day.
And God said, Let the waters under theheavens be collected into one place [of standing], and let the dry land appear. And it was so.
God called the dry land Earth, and theaccumulated waters He called Seas. And God saw that this was good (fitting, admirable) and He approved it.
And God said, Let the earth put forth[tender] vegetation: plants yielding seedand fruit trees yielding fruit whose seedis in itself, each according to its kind, upon the earth. And it was so.
The earth brought forth vegetation:plants yielding seed according to their own kinds and trees bearing fruit inwhich was their seed, each according toits kind. And God saw that it was good(suitable, admirable) and He approved it.
And there was evening and there wasmorning, a third day.
And God said, Let there be lights inthe expanse of the heavens to separatethe day from the night, and let them besigns and tokens [of God's providentcare], and [to mark] seasons, days, andyears,
And let them be lights in the expanseof the sky to give light upon the earth. And it was so.
And God made the two great lights--the greater light (the sun) to rule the day
and the lesser light (the moon) to rulethe night. He also made the stars.
And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth,
To rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from thedarkness. And God saw that it was good(fitting, pleasant) and He approved it.
And there was evening and there wasmorning, a fourth day.
And God said, Let the waters bringforth abundantly and swarm with livingcreatures, and let birds fly over the earthin the open expanse of the heavens.
God created the great sea monstersand every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forthabundantly, according to their kinds, andevery winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (suitable, admirable) and He approved it.
And God blessed them, saying, Befruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in theseas, and let the fowl multiply in theearth.
And there was evening and there wasmorning, a fifth day.
And God said, Let the earth bring forthliving creatures according to their kinds:livestock, creeping things, and [wild]beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so.
And God made the [wild] beasts of theearth according to their kinds, anddomestic animals according to their kinds, and everything that creeps uponthe earth according to its kind. And Godsaw that it was good (fitting, pleasant)and He approved it.
God said, Let Us [Father, Son, andHoly Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them havecomplete authority over the fish of thesea, the birds of the air, the [tame]beasts, and over all of the earth, andover everything that creeps upon theearth.
So God created man in His own image,in the image and likeness of God Hecreated him; male and female Hecreated them.
And God blessed them and said tothem, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill theearth, and subdue it [using all its vastresources in the service of God andman]; and have dominion over the fishof the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves uponthe earth.
And God said, See, I have given youevery plant yielding seed that is on theface of all the land and every tree withseed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.
And to all the animals on the earth andto every bird of the air and to everythingthat creeps on the ground--to everythingin which there is the breath of life--Ihave given every green plant for food. And it was so.
And God saw everything that He hadmade, and behold, it was very good
