Chapter 1: Meet your team!
1.1 Project Manager (PM)—your new best friend

Your FWK project manager will be your first point of contact on your project after it’s
signed. They will manage your schedule, walk you through the review process, and help
shape your project to meet market demands. They are on-call to answer any questions
you have about reviewing, art and photos, permissions, and production. You’ll be in
contact with them weekly, sometimes daily, as your project progresses—so it’s
important to respond and be nice to them!

1.2 Your backup band

Along the way, you’ll likely meet with various supporting players in the process. This might include pedagogical experts, content conversion staff , techies, marketing folks, and more from the Flat World Knowledge crew.

Now that everyone knows each other, let’s get writing! On to Chapter 2: Development
Chapter 2: Development
2.1 Launch Project

After the contract is signed, the first meeting you’ll have will be with your Acquisitions Editor and Project Manager to “launch” your project. This will include going over some of the details of the project, like which chapter you will select for the Alpha review, and outlining a plan for moving forward. At this point, your primary contact will shift from the Acquisitions Editor to the Project Manager to develop your manuscript and move through reviewing.

2.2 Set Schedule

Shortly after the launch meeting, your PM will send you a detailed schedule for Alpha review, Advisory Board, revision time, and final manuscript due date. These dates will reflect your contractual terms, but the schedule will be a little more fleshed out.

2.3 Authoring Templates

One way we keep our books inexpensive is by streamlining twoexpensive processes—
interior design and production. To wit, we’ve developed a series of templates that help
us recognize, order and “pour” the elements of the book quickly and economically. The
templates are clear, easy to use, and have a tag for all FWK elements. We recommend
authors use them because they remind you of required elements—like Key Terms or
Learning Objectives— as you write , which saves time and effort.

Flat World books use the Chicago Manual of Style as our style sheet, so please cite
accordingly.
See our Author Guide web page for more information. If you have any questions about
the templates, email your PM!
2.4 Standard Flat World Pedagogy
Every section of every Flat World book should contain the following pedagogical
elements:
Learning Objectives
