es, the above photo is real, wastaken, I think, by Parks & Rec and isthe Beach in Huntington Beachduring the U.S. Open of Surfing last week. Icall it the Nike Missile event . You just hadto be there to feel and see it.This is my 41st year here. I think theOcean was bigger when I first arrived, but Iam not sure. I've been the Chamber guy, theJaycee Director, helped start the VisitorsBureau in the early years... watched the hoteldream take form, watch Bob Mayer and SteveBone finalize and realize a 25 year effort.I think we've grown up. We’ve paid ourdues. We are, in fact, Surf City USA andperhaps we need to stop trying so hard. A lot of people leave their Arizona desert without water to visit our desert with water. We get a lot of people from theInland Empire, the South West. The current Visitors Bureau probably has a budget of over $1 million per year to promote us.Here is what I saw. I've traveled to mostcontinents and have spent a lot of timemarketing things to a lot of countries. I’ve solda lot of stuff right here in the US. So, I know  what selling is all about. I own a Newspaperand without Ads - there is no news reported.I think it is time for us to totally andfinally understand that we are: Surf City USA. The 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing was a giant retail success for Nike. They used this venue to promote 6.0. The demographics forthis product line are a 15 year old audience. Therefore, as I saw first hand - hundreds of thousands of very young people consumedour beach, sidewalks parking spaces, streets, Parking Structure, etc. Beauty Salons closed because their customers couldnot get there, retailers suffered - becausethere was no parking for retail clients, etc.My survey, as limited as it was - butfirst hand…the general Downtownmerchant said… "It was OK, but down fromlast year..." I purposely hung out at theFountain on Main Street several hours perday, Saturday and Sunday. Lots of 15 yearold, scarcely covered young girls parading around. No billfolds, carrying no bags.I even went to the U.S. Open onSaturday. Wow, exciting but somewhatsuffocating. I saw Police handing out Jay  Walking Tickets, underage drinking arrest, the unmistakable aroma of Pot everywhere. To some that is a good thing!I am told that the event paid the City about $160,000, of which about $140,000 went to Police and infra-structure cost. I amtold Nike spent about $7 million on the beach to create the incredible Human AntHill (HAH 2010).If these venues want to use Surf City USA... let them pay. My numbers take themor leave them. Based on what I was told various vendors paid for booth space, TV,endorsements, etc., if Nike invested $7million dollars they made at least $20million. Community leaders: we've paid forthe Brand, we own Surf City, USA... if they  want to use our City - then we should atleast benefit from 5% or more of the Grossthey enjoy... it is the American Way - HAH! Why else would we do it? We already own the market... but we do not benefit fromit. If the sun shines - the Downtownrestaurants will be full, there are only somany seats in each cafe, pub, andrestaurant. You can't put any more peoplethen they can sit. I am told the Hotelssuffered from no daytime business - the poolareas were empty because event types tookthe rooms and were gone from the hotels allday - HAH! Had the event not taken thelimited hotel room we offer - other businessmen and women and visitors would have!Show me the money. Better, explain tome (and others) the direct benefit of putting on a break-even event of this magnitude withthe enormous risk that goes along with it - if in fact we can't look each other in the eye atthe end and say... yeah, they get to go homeand we get to keep their money! I think weare now mature enough as a community anddestination to target our audiences, pick thetourist family, group and conference andmore directly benefit financially rather thanuse the shotgun and perhaps shot our owngoals and dreams in the foot. What do youthink? HAH... I am told that the City hasdecided to conduct an Economic ImpactReport on this past event and perhaps othersimilar ones to ascertain the value. The challenge I place on the table is:there has to be more value than just parking fees and police citation income to the city. The merchants, the community needs to benefit in real, measurable ways. We need to be a better place because of these events.(This is not all original thought. It is thecomplication of many conversations withinsiders like Moe, Steve, Joe, Bob, Marilyn, another half dozen business owners). Often, the summer is the only Special Event theDowntown needs... on the other hand - the winter is a cold dark partner to many local area businesses. A lot of dedicatedCity employees, and volunteers workhard to make sure we remain safe during theses vents and that they come off safely. I tip my hat to all of them and allthose who so professionally worktowards building a destination businessplan for all of us)....................... DaveG

hen Claudio MartinezRandazzo recently found a HBrestaurant for sale on Craig’sList, he called and instantly loved itsname, Randazzo. “When I found that out,it was a message that said it was meant to be,” said the new affable owner of the 23-year-old eatery. Talk about perfect fit: Hismom, Elsa Randazzo, and grandmother,Giuseppa Randazzo were fromRandazzo, Sicily. So he put a new spin onthe name by calling it “La MammaRandazzo Cucina.” It even features hismom and grandma’s recipes. And there’sa nice picture of his grandma inside. We tried one of Giuseppa’sfavorites, Polpete e Pasta, delicioushomemade meatballs in red sauce withfettuccini (although you could have itwith either angel hair or pappardelle, too.)We also loved her special Lentil Soup, made up of lentils, diced potatoes, ItalianSausage, diced pork and meat chunks in broth. Yummy! And the Baby GreenSalad was very tasty. Claudio’s mom’srecipes include Risotto Salcicces (Italiansausage in an Italian wine red sauce withArborio rice risotto) and Milanessa(lightly breaded veal fried in canolaoil, served with your choice of pasta, fries or baby greens). In addition to dinner dishes, theyalso served some great lunch choices, such as Linguini Cavallino, GnocchiDella Sera and Pollo Conlimone, just toname a few. Randazzo featuressandwiches, like Argentinean Famous“Lomito” (thinly sliced, tenderized FiletMignon topped with ham, egg, tomato, lettuce, melted cheese and mayonnaise onan artisan toasted bun) and HomemadeTri Tip (tender slices with baby greens, tomatoes and mayonnaise on a toasted baguette, served with auju sauce or homemade chimichurri). You also can order a variety of  pizzas (i.e., Margarita, Pollo Rustica andVeggie Amore), Empanadas (Argentineanturnovers filled with a homemade recipe),Espresso and there’s even a Children’sMenu with pasta and meatball, small pizza or homemade macaroni and cheese. The friendly atmosphere makes it a fun place to dine in but you also can take itout or have it delivered (free within a 5mile radius and a $15 minimum.)We highly recommend a visit to LaMamma Randazzo Cucina. Be sure andtry their great “Chow.” “Ciao” for now!

uthor WilliamPovletichdebuted hisfascinating new book,"Some Like It Cold," ata special Book Signingon July 31st at TheHuntington BeachInternational SurfingMuseum. The book isabout a WisconsinSurfin Sufari. Thestirring and occasionally chilling truestory about the two brothers who helpedtransform Sheboygan, WI, into one of the best freshwater surfing sports in theworld. For the previous six decades, twin brothers Lee and Larry Williamshave been surfing the Gnarliest Wavesdespite living nearly 2,000 miles fromany ocean.Overcoming the obstacle of being born in the middle of the country, theymade their massive pipe dreams happenon the shores of Lake Michigan. "SomeLike It Cold," A Sheboygan SurfinSurfari, chronicles the lives of these two brothers and the unique culture theyhelped build. They turned Sheboyganinto "the Malibu of the Midwest." Ashosts of the Dairyland Surf Classic, they became internationally famous for their huge beach party."This book superbly highlightsthe goodtime years of surfing on the GreatLakes," said famedSurf Photographer John Lyman of HB."Brothers Williamsare true surfers, whowill suffer throughcold water andweather to feel thefeeling only a surfer knows. This is a great read for anyoneinterested in the lesser-known history of surfing."The 188-page paperback book, published from Clerisy Press, has black and white pictures throughout. It'savailable at The Huntington BeachInternational Surfing Museum - 411Olive Avenue near 5th Street for $14.95.The author has also written"Milwaukee Braves: Heroes andHeartbrake" and "Green Bay Packers:Legends in Green and Gold." He's alsoan Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker and aheck of a nice Guy to boot. I wish himwell. Go buy his new book and enjoy agreat read!If you have questions for theauthor log on to: http://www.somelikeitcold.net . It's a must read.

I
would never trade my amazing friends, mywonderful life, my loving family for less grayhair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I've becomesomewhat kinder and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed,or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn'tneed, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I amentitled to a treat, to be messy, to be as extravagantas I can afford to be.I have seen too many dear friends leave this worldtoo soon; before they understood the great freedomthat comes with aging.Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on thecomputer until 4 AM and sleep until noon? I will dancewith myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 & 70's, andif I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will.I will walk the beach in clothes that stretches over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves withabandonment if I choose to, despite the pitying glancesfrom the jet set. They, too, will get old.I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventuallyremember the important things.Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. Howcan your heart not break when you lose a loved one,or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets passes away? But broken hearts arewhat give us strength and understanding andcompassion. A heart never broken is pristine andsterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.I am so blessed to have lived long enough tohave my hair turning gray, and to have my youthfullaughs be forever etched into deepening grooveson my face.So many have never laughed, and so many havedied before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. Youcare less about what other people think... I don'tquestion myself anymore. I've even earned the rightto be wrong and be able to admit it.So, to answer your question, I like being old. Ithas set me free. I like the person I have become. I amnot going to live forever, but while I am still here, Iwill not waste time lamenting what could have been,or worrying about what will be. And I shall eatdessert every single day (if I feel like it).
MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COMEAPART, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S STRAIGHTFROM THE HEART!

n elderly Italian man lay dying inhis bed. While suffering theagonies of impending death, hesuddenly smelled the aroma of hisfavorite tomato sauce and ravioli comingup the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. Grippingthe railing with both hands, he draggedhimself downstairs. When he reachedthe bottom of the stairsand gazed into thekitchen, where if notfor death's agony, hewould've thought hewas in heaven already, for there, spread outupon the kitchen tablewere hundreds of hisfavorite ravioli. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of love from his wife of 67years, seeing to it thathe left this world ahappy man?He threw himself towards the table, landing on his knees. The wondrous taste of the ravioli alreadyon his lips as he reached out to touch oneof his beloved foods.Suddenly he was smacked with awooden spoon by his wife who said:" BA - Fanapala NO TOUCH ! ! !DIS' is FOR YOU FUNERAL ! ! !
