Sonja Alexander June 5, 1998Headquarters, Washington, DC(Phone: 202/358-1761)RELEASE: 98-98NASA SELECTS SEVEN UNIVERSITIES TORECEIVE PARTNERSHIP AWARDSFour Historically Black Colleges and Universities and threeHispanic-Serving Institutions were competitively selected to berecipients of the Partnership Award for the Integration of Research into Mathematics, Science, Engineering and TechnologyUndergraduate Education (PAIR).The purpose of the PAIR Partnership Awards is to provideminority institutions with an opportunity to build on their NASA-sponsored research and their rich history of educationalexcellence by strengthening the Mathematics, Science, Engineeringand Technology (MSET) undergraduate academic infrastructure of theminority institutions."PAIR Partnership Award recipients will have an opportunityto create a multidisciplinary training environment at theirinstitution by engaging a broad spectrum of the MSET faculty andby advancing classrooms of students preparing to become the nextgeneration of scientists and engineers," said George E. Reese,Associate Administrator for Equal Opportunity Programs.The expected outcome from these awards is to produce a morecompetitive and diverse group of undergraduate students who,because of their participation in new and/or updated MSETcurriculum and research training in cutting-edge technologies, arebetter prepared to enter and make significant contributions toMSET graduate research programs or MSET employment in NASA-relatedfields.Each PAIR Partnership Award recipient can receive up to $2.5million over the five-year program.The Award recipients and the titles of their projects follow:
