According to the poet I'm quoting, "it's okay to work towards statement. But you should know what you're doing with image first. Otherwise it's just an opinion, not a poem." I agree with him. Image is paramount. That being said, I have violated his mandate a few times. Then again, he's not a stickler for the number of syllables rule. The two poets in question are renowned North Carolina writers and editors. (No, I was not in the pink tee shirt. That was a man who was wearing a tee with poetry printed on it.)
