Preston Pulliams, District PresidentPortland Community College
Dear Friends:Welcome to fall 2010 term at Portland Community College! The state’s budget woes remain a two-pronged challenge for all 17 of Oregon’s independentcommunity colleges.First, enrollment always rises sharply when the economy weakens. That’s because so manyOregonians turn to community colleges as a life raft to get through uncertain times. Ourenrollment is up almost 20 percent compared to last year. And last fall’s enrollment was upalmost 15 percent compared to 2008!Thousands of Oregon families are turning to the community colleges for a high-quality butaffordable education opportunity. Some want a new career as they face lay-offs or businessclosures. Others just want to sharpen up the résumé in the event of worsening news. Still othersdecide that this is the right time to go get that certicate or get a jump-start on a four-yeardegree, and to just avoid the job market for now.For whatever reason, PCC seems the right choice at the right time and our enrollment guresare skyrocketed.Second, the state Legislature – facing no good options – cut our budget in 2009 by 10 percent.Gov. Ted Kulongoski, looking at yet another economic downturn, cut our budget by another9 percent this summer. Many more students; much less state funding. It’s a difcult combination.Fortunately, our staff and faculty are ready for that challenge. Thanks to voter support in 2008,our bond measure was a success and we are opening new facilities in Washington County,Newberg and downtown Portland. We are freeing up space for much-needed classrooms andlabs at all three primary campuses plus the Southeast Center. And starting soon, we will beginremodeling or construction projects on all campuses. You can learn more – and you can get involved – by going online to www.pcc.edu/bond.Rising to meet challenges? PCC is all about that.Sincerely,Preston PulliamsCollege President
