WITH TASK FORCE ONE
Rescue team needs police protection
Star reporter Tom Spalding is traveling to Mississippi along with a crew fromWTHR (Channel 13), The Star's news- gathering partner, to follow Task ForceOne, a search-and-rescue team based in Indianapolis.
BILOXI, Miss. -- I thought folks inMississippi would have wanted to leave the devastation. But as our three-person crew drove south down Mississippi 49 onThursday, we saw few cars heading north. Many that tried became hopelessly stuck in quarter-mile or longer lines for fuel, which is a precious commodity throughout this state because of gasshortages and power failures. Some motorists were pushing their cars in those single-file lines becausetheir tanks had run dry while idling. With few people headed out, residents in southern Mississippi are left tostew in what can only be described as a huge mess.A beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico comes with the stench of rottingfish and backed-up sewers. Hurricane Katrina has pushed sand everywhere, into casinos and cemeteries, too. Most male residents walk outdoors bare-chested because it's too muggy for even a T-shirt. Tempers seem to be short. People yell at passing vehicleswith out-of-state license plates hoping for some water or other supplies. How bad is it? A delivery of portable toilets for members of Indiana Task Force One and other rescuers here was hijacked at gunpoint on Wednesday, said Task Force One coordinator Bill Brown. Now police officers from Florida are protecting the search-and-rescueteam of 34 Hoosiers and their four search dogs when they are at their basecamp, a collection of tents next to an arena not far from the beach.
