Overview

In late 2009, Yahoo! & Microsoft’s Bing announced a strategic
partnership, better known as the Search Alliance, which would
effectively consolidate the search landscape by allowing Bing to
power both paid and natural search results across the Yahoo!
network. On August 24th, Yahoo! officially announced that the
transition to Bing-powered natural search results was complete
for U.S. and Canadian (English only) Yahoo! properties. Other
languages and regions will follow in the coming weeks.

When comparing search market share, Yahoo! and Bing provide
18.3%* and 12.1%* respectively. Once the transition is c
achieve a 30.4%* share. In essence, due to Yahoo!’s reliance on Bing crawl and relevancy
technology, Bing effectively becomes the number two most widely used search engine in the U.S.
and Canada. Most importantly, brands who suffer from poor visibility and low rankings on Bing will
inevitably lose traffic from Yahoo! once this transition becomes permanent. Conversely, brand
have maintained high rankings on Bing should see an increase in traffic from Yahoo!.

Changes to Expect with Yahoo! Search Results Page

Bing officially powers the natural search results across all Yahoo! web properties in the U.S. and Canada as of August 24th, 2010. An important distinction to note, Universal Search result types such as images, Yahoo!’s WOW module, news, etc. will continue to be powered by Yahoo! and Yahoo! technology. Participation in Yahoo! feed programs such as mRSS feeds for Yahoo! video portal is still required for greater search visibility within Yahoo!’s Universal Search results.

Bing Webmaster Central Update in Support of the Yahoo! Partnership

Bing continues to update its webmaster central interface, which allows for greater visibility into
Bing’s crawl process, traffic indicators and crawl statistics similar to Google’s Webmaster Central.
In conjunction with the completed transition, Bing released several new features based on user
feedback which rivals functionality found in Google’s own Webmaster Central.
