Hello Parents! Welcome!
It’s that time of year again; school is right around the corner! We are excited to be teaching your student thisyear in the William H. Barton Intermediate building. We would like to take this time to briefly tell you aboutsome of our policies and procedures. Featured in this letter are our homework policies and procedures, classschedule, school supplies list and some important dates you might want to know about. Thanks so much for your time!
Our Classroom
Our classroom is room number 204 which is located upstairs in the 5th grade wing, next to the Music room. Our classroom will have two certified teachers in it at all times, Mrs. Renee DeBlock and Miss AmandaWheaton. Our class is partnered with Mr. Dan Snowball’s classroom and we will be going on many field tripsand participating in different activities with his class. Mr. Snowball will also be teaching science to your child.
Homework Policy
Homework is essential for meaningful learning and to extend student knowledge on a particular subject. It isnecessary to give students extra practice. Homework will usually be given 4 nights a week, it will be a rarity for the students to have homework on a Friday, with the exception of science, which will be up to Mr. Snowball’sdiscretion. We understand that our students are very busy and also have a lot of other events and activities toattend to. We feel that weekends should be saved for that. On the first day of school, the students will be givenan assignment book and a homework folder. During the school day, as we assign homework, we will write it ona section of the board that is specifically used for homework. After most of the homework has been assigned,we will give the students a few minutes to write down their assignments. At the end of the day, we will either goaround the room and sign their assignment books to make sure everyone has their assignments written down, or,we will have the students themselves check each other’s books. Your student should come home almost everyday with a signature in his/her assignment book during the beginning of the school year. The students will be graded on the homework that they complete on a daily basis. They will be given a gradeof a 0, 1 or 2. This is the same system they use in the middle school.
A 0 will be given for no effort, or not completed.
A 1 will be given if the homework has been attempted, yet not completed.
A 2 will be given if the assignment is completed and good effort has been made. The students will be given one homework grade per assignment. At the end of each quarter, the grades will be totaled and a numerical grade will be averaged into each specific subject as a homework grade. Failure tocomplete the homework assignment will result in completing it during recess time. The students will generallyhave a math assignment almost every night based on the current day’s lesson.
Spelling Policy
This year we are excited about using a spelling program called, Words Their Way. This program is tailored toyour child’s spelling needs and provides each student a list of words that are developmentally appropriate for their level. Monday through Thursday your child will have a spelling assignment due. Our goal is to promoteresponsibility and time management by allowing the students to hand in all assignments on Friday before thespelling test. It is the student’s responsibility to stay on top of their spelling homework throughout the week.
Homework Website
A homework help website has been setup on the Queensbury School District web page where homework will be posted daily. This website should act as an aid, and not take the place of writing down daily assignmentsin class. The website is located at:
