Studies all over the world indicate that economic activities related to tourism are growing, particularly those supported by natural attractions. At the same time, preservation efforts are resulting in new protected areas and constant improvement of management tools for the existing ones. In Brazil, the SNUC – National Conservation Units System, created a kind of protected areas where economic exploration is legal, such as the APA – Environment Protection Area and it is common to find lodges there. In many cases these hotels stand out by offering ecotouristic experiences, where the visitor makes contact with nature and the local population, contributing to their sustainability. Those lodges cause potential impacts and, as they depend on natural, social and cultural resource preservation, ways of diminishing the negative effects of their presence are being searched for. There are many examples of successful undertakings in this task. This study investigates the architecture of lodges installed inside the APA Costa de Itacaré – Serra Grande, in the southern coast of Bahia State, Brazil, in order to discover the differences in comparison to similar lodges located outside of protected areas, on the coast of Ilhéus. The weight up matrix concept was used to create the MASArq, Architecture Socio-environmental Evaluation Matrix, defining weights for six parameters with some specialists participation. Data were collected with a 40 question form-questionnaire in 51 lodges, from a universe of 104. The result showed that lodges located inside the APA have a more sensitive architecture to social and environmental matters, compared to those outside of it. On the other hand, this group (inside APA) has a global medium score far from the maximum: 400 points out of 1000. The group outside of the APA received only 310 points. For parameters such as “energy” and “sanitary conditions” both groups got a similar score; for the remain, “water”, “inside comfort” (the best result of the “inside the APA” group, with 70% of the maximum score), “biota” and “social-economic conditions”, all results were favorable to the inside the APA group. But for the two parameters considered the most important, “water” and “energy”, this group received only 21% and 18% of maximum score, respectively, indicating that there is much room for the lodges’ facilities improvement within protected areas. There are few official demands and patterns for lodges in protected areas and, with deficient control and guidance, architectural sustainability depends on the eventual conscience of idealist owners with futuristic vision for investing in details that will make a difference for society and the business.
