An Open Letter from Lorain County Community Leaders to Gov. Ted Strickland
August 31, 2010Ted StricklandGovernor of OhioRiffe Center, 30th Floor77 S. High St.Columbus, OH 43215VIA FACSIMILE: (614) 466-9354Dear Governor Strickland,As community leaders fully committed to helping Lorain County grow and prosper during a difficult economy,we are troubled by your recent campaign commercial criticizing Invacare, one of Lorain County
topemployers and an invaluable economic partner in our region. For more than three decades, Invacare, located in Elyria, has had a massive positive economic impact on ourcommunity and has proven to be an invaluable asset for Lorain County. Invacare has approximately 1,300employees in Ohio, is a major taxpayer to our local governments and schools, and practices a generousphilanthropic credo. In short,
Invacare’s importance to our county and region cannot be overstated.
For a sitting governor to express such politically-centered criticisms of a business that is an important and
beneficial piece of Lorain County’s econom
y is disappointing. Moreover, we are concerned with the signalthese actions send to other businesses in Lorain County and businesses considering locating here. Anyresponsible business owner or chief executive would have deep reservations about investing in a communitywhere even large, long-established and successful employers are not immune from being criticized by the
state’s m
ost powerful public official for political purposes. In light of this, we ask that you stop airing your ad on Invacare. Moving forward, we hope that you will focuson the many tasks necessary to help Lorain County and its businesses grow and prosper, and work with us tostrengthen our economy, our businesses and our communities.Respectfully,Dennis J.
