DEFENCE
Editorial
“Those who cannot remember thepast are condemned to repeat it.”
George Santayana The Life of Reason Vol 1, 1905.
For anyone with a sense of history the words of the Spanish American philosopher, writer and poet still have a powerfulrelevance today. In giving a date for a withdrawal of British and US forces from Afghanistan, politicians sound very like the men in power whoannounced when US forces would withdraw from Vietnam orBritish from Aden. I was the same age as many of the youngsoldiers who fought in these two conicts and some of them weregood friends. All of them would tell me that announcing a date for withdrawalmight have played well with the domestic electorate, it played evenbetter with the enemy, while for the men on the ground it produceda feeling of futility – why were they there and moreover who wouldbe prepared to become that grim statistic; the last man to die?Post war history has shown that few conicts have a clearconclusion. Probably the most obvious exceptions are theFalklands in 1982 and the First Gulf War in 1991. British andCoalition forces had the tough but clear task of ejecting anoccupying power from territory that had been seized by force. When the Union Flag ew over Stanley and the Kuwaiti overKuwait city it was demonstrably obvious that the enemy had beendefeated. In most conicts there is no clear tipping point where victory isassured. There are dates however when soldiers can look backand say “That was the day we started losing the war...”Hopefully in the future this will not be the way the exit date from Afghanistan will be remembered. Will FowlerEditor in Chief
