Nikolai E Jensen - 2/9 10 - KarakterHills like white elephants Ernest Hemingway1:Hills like white elephants is a short story by Ernest Hemingway first published in1927 and is written with a limited third person narrator and its almost as if we (thereaders) is just eavesdropping in on a couples conversation. Jig and TheAmerican/The man is having a discussion about whether or not or have a operationin a rather elusive way. Though the story never tells us exactly what kind ofoperation they are talking about fair to assume they are talking about an abortionbecause of the dialogue between Jig and The American such as "but i dont wantanybody but you" and "Cut it out" and that they are in Spain in the twenties, Spainbeing a catholic country abortion was very illegal back then and thats why they hadto be a little careful. The story spans over 40 minutes spent in and around a smalltrain stations bar in the vally of the Ebro for the train bound to Madrid. The couplechats randomly but soon the chat escalates to a full fledged argument over whetherthey Jig going to go through with the operation where the american tries to persuadeher in favor of the operation while she is having the second thoughts. Othercharacters include a bar maid who brings them several drinks and some peoplewaiting for the tain. The question remains unresolved.2:Jig and the American is almost steroitypical caricatures of man and woman. Jig isvery submissive as she asks him permission every time she wants to order a drinkand she tries to avoid a direct argument with him at any cost "i dont care about me"not only because they are in Spain and have to thread carefully but also because thedepend on him to survive, shes also more emotional then him when she says "thehills look like white elephants" to which he replies "I have never seen one" to us itsobvious that the american thinks Jig ment that the hills literally looked like whiteelephants while she in fact just wanted to communicate that she was thinking aboutthe baby in a subtle way since they have already once agreed to go on with theoperation before the story starts (presumably). The American is a very dominant andmale character, he is always having the final word and his wants and wishes weighfar more heavily with her then hers do with him, and its clear that he doesnt want thebaby. They may also have some deeper problems with their relationship that doesnot resolve if they just go through with the abortion, even though they seem to thinkso in the beginning of the story they soon realize that the only way they are going tohave a chance together is if they have the baby (as opposed to only having achange if getting the abortion) and maybe settle down somewhere, and thats why
