Muhammad bin Ishaq recorded a
Hadith
of Umm Salamah inhis
Sirah
, and Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded from Ibn Mas`ud,the story of the
Hijrah
(migration) to Ethiopia from Makkah.The narration mentions that Jafar bin Abi Talib recited the firstpart of this
Surah
to An-Najashi and his companions.
ِا ِَـْا ِّا ِْِ 
 
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the MostMerciful.
آ 
19:1 Kaf Ha Ya `Ain Sad.
 
یِَآَز ُَْَ ََر ِَْَر ُْآِذ 
19:2 A reminder of the mercy of your Lord to Hisservant Zakariyya.
 
ىَدَ ْذِإًّِَ ًءَِ ُَر 
19:3 When he called his Lord
(
with
)
a call in secret.

ْََو ًْَ ُسْأا َََْاَو ِﻡ ُْَْا ََهَو ِإ بَر َلَ  ًّِَ بَر َِَُِ ْُآَأ
19:4 He said: "My Lord! Indeed my bones havegrown feeble, and gray hair has Ashta`al on myhead, and I have never been unblessed in myinvocation to You, O my Lord!''
 
اًِَ ِﺕَأَْﻡا ِََآَو ِَرَو ِﻡ َِاََْا ُْِ ِإَو  ًّِَو َْُ ِﻡ ِ ْََ 
19:5 "And verily, I fear Mawali after me, and mywife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir.''
 
ًّِَر بَر ُْَْاَو َبُْَی ِلاَء ْِﻡ ُثِَیَو ِُِَی 
19:6 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) theposterity of Ya`qub. And make him, my Lord, onewith whom You are well-pleased!''
The Story of Zakariyya and His Supplication for a Son
Allah says:

Concerning Allah's statement,
َْَر ُْآِذ یِَآَز ُَْَ ََر ِ

A reminder of the mercy of your Lord to His servantZakariyya.This means that this is a reminder of Allah'smercy upon His servant Zakariyya.

Yahya bin Ya`mar recited it, (
آز َْَ ََر ِَْَر َآَذ 
)"He has reminded of your Lord's mercy to Hisservant Zakariyya.''The word
Zakariyya
in the
Ayah
has been recited withelongation and also shortened. Both recitations are well-known. He was a great Prophet from the Prophets of theChildren of Israel. In
Sahih
Al-Bukhari, it is recorded
(
that the Prophet said about Zakariyya
)
that He was acarpenter who used to eat from what he earned with hisown hand through carpentry.Concerning Allah's statement,
ِَ ءاَِ ُَر ىَدَ ْذِإ

When he called his Lord
(
with

a call in secret.He only made his supplication secretly because itis more beloved to Allah.This is similar to what Qatadah said concerning this
Ayah
,
َ ءاَِُَر ىَدَْذِإِ 
(When he called out his Lord
(
with
)
a call in secret),"Verily, Allah knows the pious heart and he hearsthe hidden voice.''
ِﻡ ُْَْا ََهَو ِإ بَر َلَ ...
 
He said: "My Lord! Indeed my bones have grownfeeble...''meaning, "I have become weak and feeble instrength.''

and gray hair has
Ashta`al
on my head,means the gray hair has burned into the blackhair. The intent is to inform of weakness and oldage, and its external and internal traces.
