 THE HIDDEN COSTSOF ELECTRICITY:
Externalities o PowerGeneration in Australia
MARCH 2009
The key nding o this review conducted by the AustralianAcademy o Technological Sciences and Engineering isthat a greater ocus on externalities, preerably quantied inmonetary terms, will help Australia to gain maximum socialand environmental benet rom the portolio o electricitygenerating technologies it will use or meeting emissionreduction targets. Externalities are environmental andsocial costs that are not accounted or in the market priceo electricity. Existing methods or valuing externalities dogive an idea o their relative costs or dierent technologiesin Australia but some major gaps and uncertaintiesneed to be resolved through urther work, preerably viacollaboration with international centres o expertise.
