The Church was translating the bible into English a millenium before the King James (and long before Whycliffe) and she copied the scriptures in the centuries before the printing press. No one was persecuted for touching the bible though inaccurate and heretical transaltions were banned. In the so called dark ages there was mass illiteracy, the litterate read in Latin.
