At the end of the quarter, return this book and the envelope of pictures to the superintendent. BIBLE VERSION USED ‘The Good News Bible is the version used in the lessons. PREPARING TO TEACH For good teaching, your preparation should include the following: | | } | | | 1. Meditation God wants to speak to your heart as well as the children’s through these lessons. You should read and’ meditate on: the: Bible ‘portion’ and apply it to your own life before thinking about how to teach it to your children, 2. Aim It is impossible to do any kind of work well unless you know what your aim is. Therefore, you must think carefully about what you want to accomplish in each lesson. Everything done during the class time should be chosen because it helps to accomplish the aim for that week. 3. Activities during class time Preschool children need help with most of their activities. Therefore, you should request your superintendent for an assistant for every 5- 6 children. These assistants can also help to prepare the visual aids. Every lesson has from 20-25 different activities. In order to remember these, itis best to write them in a list to put in your Bible. This list is easier to look at than reading from the book. The following is a’sample list of the activities in lesson 1. 1. Cooking our dinner 2, Oursheep 3. Song: We Can Move Chairs 4, Welcome Song 5. BirthdayTime 6. Poem: Sheep 7. Song: God Is Listening 8. Story 9. Thinking Together 10. Poem: The Bible 11. Song: God Is Listening 12. Song: Jesus Loves Me 13. Story Play 14. Bell 15, Song: Thank You, Dear Jesus 16. Poem: When I Pray 17. Prayer 18. Song: J’m Giving 19, . Bible Reading: Psalm 33:4 20. Song: We Can Move Chairs 21, Student Book 22. Song: God's Word 4, Visual Aids Children of this age need pictures and objects tohelp them leam, Therefore, you must take the time to prepare the things which are suggested. They are a vital part of your teaching, There are several pictures given at the back of this book. These should be colored and cut out and pasted onto cardboard. Never. show an uncolored picture to the children. You should also be looking for pictures of children, families, and things in nature from local magazines, Cut these out and keep them in a file folder. Look through this each week to see if there isa picture you can use. PLANNING THE CLASS TIME Itis best for preschool children to be together in their own place for the entire Sunday school hour. So they should not be included with the other classes in the opening assembly time, The lessons in this book are prepared for one hour of class time. 1, Arrival-Activity Time (From the arrival of the children up to 15-20 minutes of the class time) Small children are shy and afraid, Therefore, there must be an assistant who can meet each child as he arrives, This should be someone other than the teacher, who needs to be guiding the children in their activities, Every child should be directed into some activity immediately on arrival—even if he is carly. He should not have to wait for the class to begin. This waiting makes small children restless and more difficult to control. The activities suggested in these lessons are all related to the aims. They are not just play; they are important to the child’s learning. Each lesson should have at least two activities. Sometimes [ you may not be able to do both of them. Eyery child should put his offering in the container immediately when he arrives, This will keep him from playing with it and disturbing the class later on. ‘The conversations suggested are examples of what you might say to the children. They are not to be memorized but are to give ideas. 2. Bible Story Time (15-20 minutes) ‘This part includes telling the story, applying the truth learned about God to the lives of children and having the children act out the story. Acting the story will help the children remember the lesson. The story should not be toolong. 3. Worship Time (10 minutes) ‘This is placed in the center of the hour so it will be the most free from interruptions, All prayers should be simple and short and in words which the children can understand. ‘The offering is presented to God at this time. The Bible should always be handled in a way which shows respect and care. One or two verses are read from the Bible each worship time so the children will learn that the stories about God are all from the Bible. Allsongs which are suggested are in the book Songs for Nursery and Kindergarten published by PCEP. You can also buy a compact diso/ed containing all these songs. Only a few are provided since small children need to repeat songs over and over. 4. Closing Activity Time (10-15 minutes) Each member of the class should have a student book. This will provide the students something to do whichis related to the story. The teacher should read it to them and have them answer the question and color the picture, Be sure to have extra copies for visitors. The parents should be encouraged to read the stories to the children when the children take these home at the end of the quarter. HOW TO PLAN FOR PRESCHOOL CHURCH TIME Itis best for preschool children to have their ‘own church rather than to be put together with older children or adults. Preschool children need more activity and repetition than older children, They also need to be on their own so they will not disturb the older children in their worship experience. It is easy to plan the materials to use for the preschool church. Since the children need repetition, the activities and stories and songs of the Sunday school hour can be used again. The program for church should include: 1. Activity and play time (15 minutes) Use the activities in the lesson. 2. Rest and snack time (10-15 minutes) Have them lie on a mat or lay their heads down, on the table for the rest time. 3. Story and music time (15-20 minutes) Discuss the story with them and have them act it out again. Use ALL the songs and poems. 4. Closing activity time (15 minutes) Use the activity suggested below instead of the student books. This new activity along with the restand snack time will give enough variation so the church time will be different from the Sunday school hour. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR PRESCHOOL CHURCH Lesson 1 OBEYING A VOICE Have an assistant go behind a partition or stand outside the window or door of the room so, the children can hear her but not see her. Tell the children to be very quiet so they can heara voice which will tell them what to do. Have the assistant give commands in a loud voice. These could be: 1) Sing a song. 2) Shake hands with one another. 3) Stand up on your tiptoes. 4) Put your hands above your head. 5) Clap your hands. 6) Sit down. 7) Say your memory verse. After each command, you and the children will do it, Then she will give another command. If she can’t see you, prepare some ‘way of signaling her that you have done the ‘command. ‘After this activity, talk about how Moses heard a Voice but didn't see anyone. Ask whose voice spoke to him, What did the voice tell him to do? Did he obey God’s voice? How does God speak to us today? Are we learning to obey? Lesson 2 LIVING IN TENT-HOMES Have the children pretend to be the Israelites as they went on the long trip from Egypt to their new homes in Canaan. You act as Moses their leader. The following gives some’ suggestions about what to say and do. “God has told us we are to go to a-new country to live. Let's put our things on camels and donkeys.” Pretend to do this. “Now let’s lead our camels and donkeys as we go on our trip to Canaan.” Line up the children two-by-two to march around the room. ‘How thankful we are that God is taking us to a new country. We will have a better life in the new country.” “How are your donkeys? Do they need some water? Let’s stop and let them drink. We can drink also.” Pretend to do this. Then march some more. “Ir's almost evening and time to eat and rest Let's stop and eat our supper. Now let’s go to sleep.” Squat down to do this. “Tomorrow we will march again, After many days we will reach our new home. Aren't you glad God is with us and is taking care of us on this long trip?” Lesson 3. PICTURES OF NIGHTTIME Bring newsprint or let the children use the insides of their paper’ to draw pictures of nighttime. Talk about how David sang songs of praise to God about the nighttime, Emphasize that we also are thankful for nighttime because it is a time to rest so we don’t become too tired. Lesson 4 FAMILY DEVOTIONS Practice respecting God’s Word and paying attention while it is read. Do this by playing “Family Devotions.” Pretend to eat dinner. After dinner, have one of the boys hold a Bible and “read” the memory verse. Repeat several times, letting different boys take turns being the father. Tell the children to ask their parents to read the Bible to them, Lesson 5 THINGS WE WON'T NEED IN HEAVEN Bring items such as a candle, keys, medi¢ine bottle, picture of a gun, band-aid, handkerchief, eye glasses. Put these in a paper bag or box so the children can’t see them. Let a child reach in and get one item. Discuss why that item will NOT be in heaven. Do this for all the items. ‘Then review again who will be in heaven. Emphasize that we will have a happy time living with Jesus. Lesson 6 CHILDREN WHO LIVE FAR AWAY If you live in the mountains, pretend to be children who live in the city. “We are walking to church in the city.” Walk around the room. “Oh, we must cross the street. ‘There are many jeepneys in the street. Let's look both ways to be sure it is safe. Let's hold hands. Now let’s go across.” Do this three times as though crossing three streets. “Here we are at church. How thankful we are that God took care of us as we crossed those streets where there wwete so many jeepneys!” If you live in the city, pretend to be children who live in the mountains. “We are walking to church in the mountains. The path is narrow so we must walk in a line,” ‘Walk around the room, “Look, there is @'stream ‘we must cross. There is no bridge so we must wade. It is good the water isn't too deep. Let's hold hands as we wade the stream so no one will fall. Now let's go in a line again. Let's step high as we climb up the mountain. Now let’s take smaller stepsas we go back down into the valley. Here is another stream we must cross.” Continue this for two or three streams. “Here we are at church. How thankful we are God took care of us.as.we crossed all those streams on our way.” Lesson 7 WHEN WILL THE LORD JESUS COME? This is a game. Lead the children in doing various activities such as sleeping, cating, playing a game, sweeping the floor, riding on a jeepney, taking a bath. Have an assistant stand outside the room so she cannot be seen. ‘Afier the children have played briefly, the assistant will make the noise of a trumpet. She can do this by singing through a rolled up piece of paper. You will then say, “There is the trumpet sound. Let's go to meet Jesus!” Do this with each activity Explain that when the Lord Jesus really comes and the angel blows the trumpet, our bodies will rise in the air to meet Him, The purpose of this activity is to create an attitude of expecting the Lord to come at any time. Its also to help them feel joy when they think of His coming. Lesson 8 OBEYING THE COMMAND OF THE LORD Haye all the children pretend to be Naaman. Ride in a chariot to Elisha’s house. Send your servant in to get Elisha. Listen to what he says. Look angry at first. Start to go one way, then stop and goto the Jordan River. Go into the water and dip seven times. Squat and stand up seven times. Look at your arms, feel them, and smile. Atthe end of the story play, thank the Lord for healing your bodies when you become sick. Pray forany child who is sick. Lesson 9 MAKING CROWNS Cut outa crown for each child. It is best if you can find lightweight cardboard, but bond paper will do, To make the crown, fold the paper lengthwise as in sketch A. Fold it again and cutas in sketch B. You should have two pieces as in sketch C. Have the children draw and color circles on the crowns to represent jewels. Then you paste the two ends together to make the | crown fit the head of each child (sketch D). fold Y lightwelght cardboard cot long za bond paper Lesson 10 REVIEWING OUR STORY When you tell the Bible story, let several children each hold one of the sandbox figures. ‘When you come to the place in the story where a figure is used, let the child holding it put it in the sandbox or on the table. Later on you can review the story again by holding up the figures and asking who they are and what they did for Jesus, Lesson 11 TELLING ABOUT JESUS ON THE RADIO OR TV Introduce this activity by talking about some pastor or evangelist who speaks on the radio or ‘TV. Then have them play that they are making a radio or TV broadcast. For a microphone, use stick or a real one if you have one. Here is a suggestion for the program. Remind the children they need to be very quiet while they are on the radio/TV. Announcer: (Teacher or assistant) This is jesus Loves Children program coming to you from station (name a local one). We will begin our program today with a song from the Sunshine Singing Group. Allthe children: 1 Will Sing of the Goodness of the Lord Announcer: We are happy and can sing to you today because God is good. We are happy because Jesus our Savior is alive, ‘All the children: Jesus Is Living in Heaven Today Announcer: Jesus is not only living in heaven today but is with us too. He loves every one of us. All the children: Jesus Loves the Little Children ‘Announcer: Do you know that Jesus loves litle children as well as big people? The Bible tells us a story that shows the love of Jesus for children, (Read Matthew 19:13-15.) Are you glad Jesus loves you? Let's sing our thanks to Him for His love. All the children: Thank You, Dear Jesus Lesson 12 PLAYING WITH PUZZLES From magazines or calendars cut out large pictures of cars, trucks, airplanes, boats, etc. Paste each picture onto thin cardboard (like the back ofa writing tablet). Cut the picture into 5-7 pieces to make a puzzle. (See sketch E as an example.) Try to have enough puzzles for every 23 children in the class. During class let an older child work with a younger one in putting a puzzle together. Talk about the various kinds of transportation we can use to go to nearby places and those far away. ‘Another activity would be to do actions of different kinds of travel and let the children guess what itis. 6 Lesson 13. BRINGING OTHERS TO CHRIST Let the children hold the cut-out figures as you retell the story. j Repeat the “Practicing Right Conduct” activity from lesson 10. VISUAL AIDS TO PREPARE 1.
