th
2010DURATION: 4 HOURS WEEKLYSCHOOL YEAR: 2010-2011GRADE MOTTO: “Building up my independence by contributing to theenvironment and atmosphere at school and at home”.CONTENT:Unit 1: MATTER
1.1
Structure of matter: atom, molecules.
1.2
Changes in the states of matter: condensation, solidification, evaporation, fusion and boiling.1.3Contamination by solids, liquids and gases.Problem situations in Science associated with recycling and caring of water in the city of Cali.
Area Project:
Environmental impact in our city (recycling and caring of water).
PURPOSE:
This year we will start off by presenting the students the “SOLID RESIDUESMANAGEMENT PROJECT” which will be reinforced by the homeroom teachers. Thestudents will learn and make different activities which will lead them to a clear understanding of what matter is, its changes and characteristics, as well as theimportance of recycling and caring of water in our city Cali in order to develop anenvironmental conscience. Through the activities the students will make a directobservation at matter and its changes helping them increase their understanding of theproperties of objects and materials that they encounter on a daily basis having themexperiment in the classroom or the Science Lab. Through this observation andmanipulation of objects the students will recognize and describe the differencesbetween solids, liquids, and gases and the contamination caused by them. The students will continue working based on the “Little Scientist” method. Another topicthat will be discussed in class is the Scientific Method, which will be taught to thestudents through problem situations in Science associated with recycling and caring of water in the city of Cali. The workshops, conferences, guides and reinforcementactivities will be posted in the Second Grade Science Blog. The students will be invitedto participate in a Science Marathon, which consists of their continuous participationthroughout the school year in different tasks assigned by the teacher through theteacher’s blog:

DIDACTIC:INSTRUCTION: “I understand what matter is, its characteristics and changes”
.I will start off the week by doing different diagnostic activities. Before having any class,topic-related activity or give any explanations of the topics for this marking period, I willexplain and discuss the “Solid Residues Management Project” to the students. Videosand powerpoint presentations will be shown. The students will answer questions like: “What is matter? Does matter exist in differentforms? As an introduction, different examples of what matter is will be given in class tothe students and afterwards an activity will be done before giving a definition. Thestudents will be asked to stand up by their desks. Then I will slightly explain what amolecule and atom are, matter and its states. We will do an activity in which they willrepresent water molecules transitioning through different states of matter. I will explainthat when I call out a state of matter, I want them to move like the molecules at thatstate. For example: When I call out a state of matter, such as “SOLID.” Students shouldwalk very slowly around the room and so on.Once done with the exercise, I will move on to tell them that matter is almost everythingaround them. The students will write down simple definitions based on what they havecome up with and my guidance. All things, living and nonliving are made up of matter. All matter takes up space. Matter exists in three states or phases: solids, liquids, andgases and they can come in many shapes and sizes. Video clips will beshown as well as PowerPoint presentations to reinforce the topic, wherethe students can see how the molecules move in each state of matter and thecharacteristics of each phase. Examples will be used in the classroom and a simpleconcept map will be done together with the students for a better understanding of thethree states of matter. Once the students do a concept map with the teacher, we willcreate one together to strengthen its design and then later on they will be asked tocreate different ones. E.g.

1.1 Structure of matter:
All matter is made up of parts too small to see called atoms.Atoms that are joined together are called molecules. To explain this powerpoint andvideo clips will be shown in class.

The properties of a solid include maintaining size, shape and visibility. The moleculesof a solid are very close together and cannot move out of their places. Therefore, solids keep their shape. Examples of solids include: rocks, trees, pencils and books. The characteristics of liquids, solids and gases will be explained to the studentsthrough some powerpoint presentations . The properties of a liquidinclude the ability to change shape based on the container while not changing involume. To explain the concept of volume I will tell them that volume is themeasurement of space taken up by something. Solids, liquids and gases all take upspace.
I will s
how the students that volume is the space taken up inside of something. As an example I will take a see through plastic cup and will fill it with water; the volumeis how much water is in the cup. For example, water poured into a square container willappear
square
and the same water poured into a round container will appear round. Most liquids are visible. The molecules of a liquid are not as close together as those of a solid. They are free to move, which explains why they take shape of the container, which they are in.The properties of gas include invisibility and the ability to change shape easily. Gasmolecules move about freely. They fill all available space in a container. The moleculesof a gas are spread very far apart from each other. Examples of gases include: helium, oxygen, and hydrogen.
