Thebiggest one is increasing ourmembership numbers, and runninga close second is improving ourwebsite and its usefulness. The EBCA community is a totalvolunteer organization. Our budgetand our ability to provide servicesto our community like thenewsletter, Labor Day Picnic andHalloween parade is based on thenumber of folks who send in their$15 annual membership dues. There is also a FacebookPage called East Bethesda Citizens Association which residents whoare on Facebook can join to shareinformation. We are also keeping our eye onthe Lynnbrook Recreation Center. As you know, the MontgomeryCounty Council decided to close theLynnbrook and other similarneighborhood facilities to help closethe budget gap. This is a hugeissue, in my opinion, becauseLynnbrook has served thiscommunity for over 40 years. Andnow that it is closed, there is notelling what the County Councilmight do with the property, letalone the fact that it is not beingmaintained. Could EBCA work outa deal with the County to managethe facility? Could we buy it? Whatdoes this mean to us as anorganization and what does itmean to the greater neighborhood?I would like to take a quick poll tosee how many would rent thefacility for an event. It is greatspace including a full kitchen, men’s and women’s bathrooms, tables and chairs. It is perfect forholding a bridge tournament, pokernight, movie night for the kids, andrun around space when it is toocold to go outside. Please send mean email at president@ebca.org andlet me know what you think. Finally, there are a couple of upcoming events to note. We willhold our annual Labor Day Picnicon Monday, September 6th atLynnbrook Park from 2 to 5 p.m.Primary elections will be held onTuesday, September 14th, and ourEBCA general membershipmeeting, open to all residents, willbe held on Wednesday, September22nd at B-CC High School. Pleasecome out and support B-CC HighSchool athletics, too.

SEPT 2010
In his
Meditation XVII
written in 1624, English poetJohn Donne proposes that human beings do not thrive inisolation. Rather, he says we are all interconnected. Hewrites, “every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”Today, more than ever, Donne’s words ring true. Werely on the grocer to collect our food, the electriccompany to light our homes, the teacher to educate ourchildren, and the government to ensure our health andsafety. Yet, as our dependence on one another intensifies, ourlines of communication pull further apart. Tweeting hasreplaced talking, being “friends” refers to contacts onFacebook, blogging is the new family reunion, andtexting is acceptable as the required daily contact tomom and dad. With every upgrade in technology, we addanother degree of separation to the human condition. As the new Membership Chair of the East BethesdaCitizens Association, it is my goal not only to increasethe membership of the association, but also to inspiremy neighbors to participate. East Bethesda is facinga number of crucial issues that affect us first-hand.There are zero degrees of separation between ourdaily lives and the expansion of the National NavalMedical Center, the construction of the Purple Line, increases in population, and school redistricting. These issues will potentially increase the duration of our commutes; alter the quality of our children’seducation, the value of our homes and the safety of our neighborhood; and result in the loss of our trailsand green space. It is important to stay informed (join EBCA onFacebook, visit us at www.ebca.org, or join our yahoogroup). But it is even more important to participate. We must all work together, hand-in-hand, withoutany barriers or separation. To find out how you canget involved, please call me at 202-390-9800 or sendan email to jill.chodorov@longandfoster.com.
