Arts funders and policymakers increasingly call on arts and cultural organisations to be more innovative. Yet, there is little clarity about what innovation means in an arts and cultural context. This report addresses this problem by proposing an innovation framework that can be used by arts organisations and funders alike.

Culture of Innovation
An economic analysis of innovation in arts and cultural organisations
Foreword
Seemingly a paradox exists in the arts: creativity and novelty lie at the heart of all artisticendeavour, yet funders call on arts and cultural organisations to be more innovative.Understanding this paradox is one of the reasons why NESTA embarked on the research on whichthis report is based.Working with one of the world’s leading cultural economists and two of the UK’s premier culturalinstitutions, the report proposes a framework for innovation that can be used by both arts fundersand arts organisations. It describes the rich ways that arts and cultural organisations innovate inaudience reach, push out artistic frontiers and create economic and cultural value.
Culture of Innovation
is the outcome of a novel research-led collaboration between NESTA, theNational Theatre and the Tate. It is a Research and Development model we think should be takenup by arts funders and arts organisations more widely. I welcome your reactions.
