By Adewale Sanyaolu
HE high rate of unemployment in the country has been linked to the prevalentfalsification of credentials by applicants desperate to secure job placement.Managing Director of Background Check International (BCI), Mr. Kola Olugbodi, said thisrecently during an interactive session with journalists. He noted that majority of applicants parade fake results, curriculum vitae, fake addressesand doctored working records, adding that about 33 per cent of job applicants belong tothis category.Olugbodi stressed that eventually when this set of applicants are caught, they alwaysadduce their reasons to high unemployment. This, he said is not an excuse that istenable, because falsification of credentials or records remain a criminal act."Though, we all know that the unemployment rate is so high. And this rightly explainsthe reason why these applicants falsify results. But, at the same time, this will not be anexcuse under the law when one is caught," he said. The firm, according to him, specialises in full-service background check, employmentscreening, claims verification, risk assessment/management, vital document verificationand intelligence services.Specifically, the employees background check or pre-employment investigations areimportant to conduct before hiring an individual. Because through these checks, anemployer can cut the hassle of having to go through many bad employees to get to theright one."Some informative pre-employment tests include educational qualification verifications, previous employment verifications, reference checks, address confirmation and criminalrecord checks amongst others.Besides, he said background screening could also be helpful in finding out about theperson's past. Because there are important considerations that can affect the credibilityof a potential employee.Olugbodi added that failure to perform pre-employment screening could destroyeverything a business owner or manager has worked hard to build.
