DehydrationWhat is dehydration and how can our bodies avoid it. Dehydration can be a very dangeroussymptom, sometimes fatal if not treated immediately. Most common causing of dehydration islong periods of exposure to the sun without consuming water. When we sweat, we secret fluidfrom our sweat glands and if we do not replenish the liquid it can result in dehydration.Why is water essential to health maintenance?The body is made mostly of 70 % water and 25% solid matter. We can go without food for weeks, but without water, we die of dehydration in a few days. Over two-thirds of our body iswater yet most of us do not clearly understand the importance of drinking plain water (InternetHealth Library, 2008).What are the functions of water in the body?Water is the most abundant compound in the human body and is necessary for the digestionof food, transport of food to the tissues, the elimination of body wastes, the circulation of bodyfluids (like blood and lymph), and for a lubricant in the joints and internal organs - keeping themmoist permitting the passage of substances between the cells and blood vessels - and for theregulation of body temperature. Water Is part of the blood system holding dissolved minerals,like calcium and magnesium in solution, making them available to the body tissues when they anrequired for proper health. Water makes up most of the human body and is necessary for digestion of food (Internet Health Library, 2008).When the body consumes water, blood viscosity; join cartilage, digestion all work in anefficient, easy manner. However, when the body has a deficiency of water, the body robs someareas that protect the tissue and organs, which results in pain. Water can also alleviate many problems in the body, such as headaches, asthma, allergies, hypertension and high cholesterol,migraines, and low back pain. Dehydration because when body overheats, it loses essential fluids through sweating. Water is essential tomuscle tissue growth and therefore should be consumed while weightlifting or will result in painand dehydration. Many studies have shown how water affects when the body is challenged, for example mountain climbing. In addition, tests have been conducted with two teams competingagainst each other in a rock-climbing event, but one team was highly fit and much better condition. During the competition, the less fit team beat the other team and was discovered it wasdue to team drinking water during the competition, which resulted in their victory.What happens to the body when it does not get the water it needs?When the body does not have the water, it needs, it can get dehydrated. Dehydration meansthe body does not have enough water and fluids. A person can have hydration from diarrhea andvomiting. Dehydration can be caused by not drinking enough water, or by losing fluid. Whendehydration occurs, body starts to sweat profusely, skin feels clammy and can start to feel dizzy,nauseous and experience pain.
