5. Bombing Data
Following the assembly by Groups, the miss:;,_on proceeded to target; ninety-four (94) aircraft reached the target area; sixteen (16) of the aircraft taking off aborted. The first a11'cpaft released its bombs at 240312Z and the last aircraft at 240537Z, a total of eighty-ei~ht (88) aircraft releasing bombs on bo~h targets 1 twen~y-four (24) Ale on the Mus~sn'ino Plant, and ,nxty-four \ 64) af.r or at t over the dock and urban ar ea of Tokyo. 7. Enemy Attack Data
There seem to have been no planned methods of a~ta?k.or coordination; the majority of them were executed by l.ndlVldual fighters. Almost all breakaways were below and to the right and left. Approximately one hundred (100) passes were started which did not materialize.
8. Antiaircraft Fire
Antiaircraft f.ire over the primary target area was meager to moderate and generally inaccurate. Heavy flak w!'ls reported over the primary target ~t altitudes varying from 28,000 to )2,000 feet. Deviations were generally from below, although a few bursts occured five hundred (500) feet to one thousand (1000) feet above the formation; flak followed the formation and got closer with succeeding bursts. All bursts were behind and right and left. Fire was continuously-pointed. Over the docks and industrial area of Tokyo antiaircraft fire was moderate to meager and generally accurate at altitudes from 2,8,000 feet to 32,000
feet. .
9. Route Back
Aircraft were to return individually rr om 1,00 mi Les off the enemy coast or at a further point if under enemy attack. The return from the target area was made in for ation as directed
by Field Order Number 21, to a point opposite Iwo Jima, from which aircraft returned to base individually. Tr..e first air:! craft landed at 2409267 and the last one at 2412~9Z.
10. DamalZe Assessment
Photo interpretation indiCates forty-f'our (44) bursts, sixteen (161 in the target area. The lead Squadron, bombing visually, had five (5,) bur-at-a on the target; the .remainder v.sr e in
the barracks and warehouse area just to the northeast of the target. Since only four percent (4%) of all bombs dropped wer-e observed in the primary target ar ea., r e su I ts of the bombing were not considered satisfactory.
11. Own Losses
Our combat losses consist of one aircraft lost owing to empennage damage which resttlted when the aircraft wa-s struck by
an enemy fighter reported to be out of control. Another aircraft was lost ,when 1 t ran out of fuel and ditched. Nine (9) airc~aft recei 1Ted generally minor battle damage from enemy aircraft 1'i:;:,e and flak.
Personnel losses were one man killed, eleven men IT:i3S'i~l.f, and four men injured.

2,' A Types of E/A Sighted:
,Beoause the six Combat Groups were over the target area .t difterent times throughout a 2-hour period, tIle number of separate airborne E/A sighted oannot be aoourately determined. However, it i.e estimated that there were approximately 125 separate X/A airborne in the target area during these attacks. Several crews reportedslghting as many as 60 to 76 E/A at onetime, a great number of whiCh, were from 2,000' to 5,000' below.
In addition to the A/C types detailed in paragraph 22, the following were reported as Sighted but not attacking:
J BD'l'Y. 5 Runs 1 JANICE
1 Unidentified s/E A/e with square tips on wing and horizontal stabilizer. Said to resemble the Ju-S7 very muoh.
23. TYPE AND ACCURAOY OF ENEMY FIRE AND TYPE PROn:CTILE:
7.7-mm. and 12.7-mm maohine gun fire, 8.S well as 20-mm cannon
fire was identified. This was reported to bahaccurate, and comparatively tew hits were scored on a.y parts of the B-29s. Attacks were of varying degrees of aggressiveness with breakoffs ranging from 500 yards to 100 feet. ~e T/E fighters were reported in many
instanoes to be more aggressive than the S/E A/C.
