Castlegar is a small city in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada.
It is located within the Selkirk Mountains at the confluence of the Kootenay and
Columbia Rivers. It is a regional trade and transportation centre, with a local econ-
omy fuelled by forestry and tourism. It is home to Selkirk College, a regional air-
port, a pulp mill, and several small sawmills. The population of 7,259 people in-
cludes a large number of Doukhobors, who were largely responsible for much of
Castlegar's early development and growth. A sizeable Portuguese community
grew as workers, mainly from the Azores islands, moved in to take up employment
in the area. The area which was to become Castlegar was an important centre for
the Sinixt (Lakes) Peoples. Outside the city limits are the small surrounding com-
munities of Blueberry, Ootischenia, Brilliant, Robson, Robson West, Raspberry,
Tarrys, Thrums, Shoreacres, Fairview, Genelle, Pass Creek and Krestova. There
are also the much smaller communities of Deer Park, Renata, and Syringa on
Lower Arrow Lake. Taken together, these outlying areas comprise an approximate

AND HER STEPCHILDREN IN TRYING TO RID THE WORLD OF DDT.
ALLEGEDLY, LARGE NUMBERS OF BIRDS WERE KILLED AFTER AP-
PLICATIONS OF DDT. U NFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE NO VALID
REPORTS, OR EVEN PHOTOS FOR THAT MATTER, THAT SUPPORT
THIS BIRD ALLEGATION. AND, THERE ARE NO VALID REPORTS
TH AT C ONF IRM PROBLEMS W ITH C H ILDRE N. OR ANYBODY ELSE
FOR THAT MATTER. IT IS ALL SPECULATIO N, LIES, AND MIS–
INFORMATION.

In fact, the Canadian Cancer Society is so convinced by the sta-

tistics, said M OORE , it wants the provincial government to ban the
sale of pesticides.

ETY DOES NOT SHARE THE SAME VIEWPOINT.

In the meantime, she added, municipalities such as Castlegar can

take a proactive stance, fashion some strong bylaws and become
pesticide free.

“ In Canada, there are 154 municipalities which have adopted

pesticide–free bylaws. Twenty of those are in British Co-
lumbia,” M OORE said.

M OORE added for many municipalities that are sitting on the pesti-
cide–free fence, it’s just a matter of education to help them make
the change.

William H. Gathercole holds a degree in Horticulture from the UNIVERSITY OF G UELPH, and another pure and applied sci-
ence degree from MCGILL U NIVERSITY. He has worked in virtually all aspects of the GREEN S PACE INDUSTRY, including
public affairs, personal safety, and environmental issues. Mr. Gathercole has been a consultant and instructor for
decades. He also been an agricultural agronomist. Mr. Gathercole has been following the evolution of ENVIRONMENTAL
TERRORISM for over a quarter–century. His involvement in environmental issues reached a fevered pitch in the 1990s,
when he orchestrated, with others, legal action against unethical and excessive municipal regulations restricting the
use of pest control products. ( i.e. the Town of Hudson. ) Although he can be accused of being ANTI –ENVIRONMENT–
MOVEMENT, he is, in fact, simply a strong advocate FOR the GREEN S PACE I NDUSTRY. However, this position has not pre-
cluded him from criticizing the Green Space Industry itself. Nonetheless, his vast knowledge of our long journey with
