WaikatoBranchBlack Sand Miningon Our West Coast
P
lans to mine black sand from alarge area of seabed betweenKaipara and Taranaki are stillpossible. Black Sands Mining’srecent application was turned downby Crown Minerals due to lack oftechnical information, however thecompany is expected to applyagain.
There is real concern about the potential for sandmining to destroy complex ecosystems, threaten thealready endangered Maui’s dolphin and devastate ourWest Coast beaches.Liz Slooten our new Deputy President, a marineresearch scientist with a special interest in Maui’sdolphin notes that until we know more about what sortof activity is planned (depths, volume of sand to beremoved, where the left-over sand be deposited, etc.) itwill be difficult to be specific about the likelybiological effects for this particular stretch of coast.Even if we had more detailed information on theplanned mining activity, the consensus seems to bethat so little is known about the physical processes andecology of the area that it will be difficult to predictthe effects. While there are so many unknowns anddue to potential harmful effects, Forest & Bird willsupport opposition to black sand mining - until goodquality research proves otherwise.

Obituary - Owen Wilkes
Owen was known to many of our branch members, he died unexpectedly inKawhia recently. Owen was a well-known peace activist and anti nuclearcampaigner, he was charged with espionage in Norway but was let off with a finewhen it was realised that he was not working for a foreign government. He waslater in trouble with the Swedish authorities accused of improperly acquiringclassified information on Swedish defence. He protested against the operations of the Tangimoana and Waihopai communications centres suspecting them to be partof the American world wide electronic spying network.More recently Owen rediscovered his passion for archaeology and developed anencyclopaedic knowledge of pre Europeansettlement in the King Country and Waikato areas. We were privileged to have Owen & Mae with us at our 2002 camp at Kiritehere.Owen helped us extend our knowledge of the landscape and how land use hadmodified the ecology and landform over time.Several of us had also recently been with Owen on a visit to Te Maika and to visitto the Pohutukawa tree marking the northern most boundary of Te Rohe Pötae(King Country) and remnant taro gardens close to Aotea.Owen is greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues. His partner May andfriends encourage donations to be made to Kawhia Harbour Protection Society inhis memory.

EALAND BUSH FALCON IN PLANTATION FORESTRY
.The New Zealand falcon (
Falco novaeseelandiae
) is an endemicspecies that is currently thought to be in decline. New Zealand bushfalcons are historically known to have bred widely throughout thepodocarp dominated forests of the North Island. Recently, bush falconshave been discovered breeding in the pine plantations of the CentralPlateau. How New Zealand bush falcons use pine plantationsrepresents a gap in the knowledge required to encourage thepersistence of the New Zealand falcon. In this talk Richard will describe his work with the falcon in Kaingaroapine plantation and the relevance of this to the conservation of NewZealand falcon as a whole.
