Dissolving Magnesium
What is the independent variable? The temperature of the AcidList the Variables that need to be controlled.
Amount of Acid
 Type of Acid
Amount of Magnesium
Quality and cleanliness of MagnesiumAim: To observe the effects of temperature on dissolvingMagnesium in Hydrochloric Acid.Equipment:
Heating Equipment
 Test tube rack
 Test tube Holder
Lab Stand
10 ml measuring cylinder
Scissors
Ruler
Hydrochloric Acid
Magnesium Ribbon
Stop-watch
Large test tube
Conical Flask
 Thermometer
Ice
WaterMethod:1.Pour 10 ml Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) into a test tube.
2.
Using an ice bath (Fig. A) and a thermometer, cool theacid to 5°C.3.Cut the Magnesium (Mg) Ribbon into 4 2.5 cm pieces.
4.
Drop 1 piece of Mg into the HCl (fig. 2), time until the Mgis dissolved. You may rest the Test tube in the Test tubeholder.5.Record the time in the table.6.Rinse the Test tube out.7.Repeat steps 1, 4, 5 and 6 with the exception that theHCl is at 20°C. Do not cool the HCl below 20°C.8.Pour 10 ml HCl into a Test tube.
9.
Using a steam bath (Fig. 3), heat the HCl to 40°C.

10.Drop 1 piece of Mg into the HCl, time until the Mgis dissolved. You may rest the Test tube in the Test tubeholder.11.Record the time in the table.12.Rinse the Test tube out.13.Repeat steps 8-11 with the exception that the HClis at 60°C. Do not heat the HCl above 60°C.14.Create a Graph of Temperature vs. Time, usingthe results. Results: Temperature C)Time (minutes)52:30202:00401:30601:00

Conclusion: As the temperature increases, so does the speed as towhich the HCl dissolves the Mg.
