MEMORANDUM
TO: GARMENT -- for discussion with Ellsworth, Sears,
Sterling and others who may have to
answer inquiries from the press when
our letter hits.
FROM: pe
There will be a full day, Thursday, in which
the press will have nothing to write about except the
fact that we wrote a letter, I think we should be most
cooperative in giving them the background of that decision,
pointing out that RN made the decision himself and deter-
mined its implementation and that he will answer all
questions with regard to what other primaries we are
going to enter at his press conference on Friday.
I think we should make a point out of the fact
that RN decided to mail to all voters, including Democratic
voters in New Hampshire because, from the beginning, he
believes we should set our sights on November rather
than on simply winning the primary in March and the nom-
ination in August.
I would coordinate all of this with our announce-
ment of schedule and then background information to some
of our friends, Perhaps a good story in the New York Times,
Which will Imock down the likes of Evans, Novak and othersa
who have been writing inaccuracies,to point out that
we have made no change in our plans in New Hampshire
and Wisconsin, that the final decisions as to the type
of campaign and the extent of the campaign had to wait
RN's decision, that our campaign will be very intensive,
that what RN wants to do in the months ahead is to meet
as many people, talk to as many people and listen to as
many people as he possibly can.
