WhenScribdlaunchedin2007,ourgoalwastomakewrittenmaterialaseasytopublishanddiscoverasablog.Sothatanauthor,student,businesspersonoranyoneelsewantingtosharetheirworkcouldfindreaders–nomatterwhoorwheretheywere–throughtheinherentefficienciesoftheInternet.Atfirst,thismeantfiguringouthowtoconvertdocumentsintowebpagesandthengettingthemindexedbysearchenginessothatanyoneseekinginformationaboutthelatestresearchinparticlephysics,forexample,couldeasilyfindtherelevantreportonScribd.We’velearnedalotoverthelastthreeyears,especiallywithourtransitionfromaFlashtoHTML5readingexperience.Atthesametime,itbecameclearearlyonthatwecouldn’trelyonsearchaloneifwewantedtocreateadynamicreadingexperience.Todothat,weneededtotapintothesocialgraph,whichwasstartingtoplayanimportantroleincontentdiscovery.Thishasbecomeeventruertoday.Eventoday,contentrecommendationsmadethroughpopularsocialnetworkslikeFacebookandTwitterfocusprimarilyonnewsandshort-formvideo,socialgamesandweblinks.Andalways,thecontentissecondarytothepersonmakingtherecommendation.Scribdisfocusingonthecontentitself,andit’sobviousthere’samarketdemand;
