The game of Go is one of the most challenging and underrated games in ourcountry. A part of this is because it is not yet very popular because it has just recently made its way intoour society around the 1900s. The Morehouse Go Club(MGC) will break this stigma and bring the gameto life through an online game play course, one on one practice between players and teachers, and abrief examination weekly of the history of the game. Players will also have a goal to shoot for and try tobecome the months strongest player(Go-Doroku) and most improved player. The ultimate goal of theclub is to participate in an actual tournament and eventually win Morehouse College a Memento.
Go is the oldest game in the world that is still played in its original form. It was first introduced toAmerica after Edward Lasker, the cousin of the legendary chess player Emanuel Lasker, stumbled uponthe game. He then went on to create the American Go Association(AGA). There are only about 2000member is the AGA and remains a small group of players. This club will make Morehouse one of thevery first HBCUs to support a Go club and advocate the growth of the game throughout America. Thisclub is also another way to help diversify Morehouse College, and give students more club/activityoptions. It is a fun and interactive way to teach students how to think critically and to think ahead of their opponent. As influential as this game has been in other countries and here in our own, it should berecognized and studied. It is also believed that those that play Go gain brain cells.
The objectives for this club are to have each of its members reach the rank of 20Kyu by theend of the term. Students will also be knowledgeable in the history of Go and its importance in the Asiancommunity. After creating a team of members, the club will join its first tournament event whilerepresenting Morehouse, in order to test their progress versus other players. Lastly, students will havecreated an online GoKGS account where they will be able to play the game globally.
Getting the club off the ground will be the responsibility of the president of the club. Flyerswill be made, distributed, and placed in open areas that will attract the attention of potential students.Orating the name of the game is the name of the game and will be done in accordance with the flyers.
