Hi and Hola - Welcome to this edition Southem Online. Timing is everything, as the old saying goes. It just so happened that the New Zealand Journal of Forestry ran a theme on multi-storey wooden buildings just at the same time that a massive earthquake struck Christchurch, the country’s second largest city. Suddenly, the series of articles editor Piers Maclaren had gathered to background this new technology and its relevance to earthquakes had suddenly become very relevant indeed. And the will they or won’t wait is over in Australia, where independents have joined the Greens in backing the ruling Labor Party to remain in government. However, a more cautious approach this time around could see the government being merely Green-lite.

TRUTH LIKELY FIRST CASUALTY OF NEW GREEN-LITE AUSTRALIANGOVERNMENT
The first casualty of war is said to be the truth. The same, it could be said, applies also to politics. Australia’s new Green-lite Government is widelyexpected to make a cautious return to the introduction of an emissions tradingscheme at the same time as boosting the introduction of renewable energytechnologies. Although obviously underpinning a commitment to fight climatechange, the two – an ETS scheme and renewable energy – are also part of the bargaining that gave Labor the chance to form a government after afortnight in limbo.http://tinyurl.com/southemtruth************************************************
WILLMOTT FORESTS SUCKED INTO MIS BLACK HOLE
Willmott Forests, one of Australia’s remaining publicly listed forestryinvestment vehicles, has succumbed to the collapse of the managedinvestment sector. Unlike many of the credit crunch victims in the MIScollapse, which were largely based on fast-turnaround eucalypt farming,Willmott had been a standard bearer for longer term Radiata pine plantations.http://tinyurl.com/southemwillmott************************************************
REPORT CLAIMS ETS WOULD PUSH FORESTRY ONTO FARMLAND
A new report is set to assert that an emissions trading scheme in Australiawould inevitably mean that carbon sink forestry will compete with agriculturefor land, Stock & Land reported. It said, the study, commissioned by theAustralian Farm Institute from GHD Hassall, is a review of existing researchinto how a price on carbon would drive carbon sink forestry and its interactionwith agriculture.
