ohn Michael Osbourne was born on December 3, 1948, in Aston,a suburb o the English midlands city o Birmingham. The city, like the country, was still recovering rom seven years o WorldWar Two—Birmingham, one o Britain’s major industrial hubs, had been damaged heavily by German bombing and many businesseswere still struggling to pull themselves out o the bombsites and cratersthat littered the metropolis. His parents were lucky enough to have jobs with two o the companiesthat were back on their eet. Ozzy’s ather, John senior, was a toolmakerat GEC, while his mother, Lillian, worked or Lucas, a company thatmade auto components. With ve children to support, they needed allthe income they could raise.Today, an army o sociologists and psychologists would very likely fockto describe his childhood and upbringing as “under-privileged” but at thetime, it was normal. Almost without exception, the generation o Britishrock musicians that rose up during the mid- to late 1960s (and beyond)were raised under similar circumstances, by parents who ought to putood on the table, amid the rubble and debris o the most destructive warthe world, let alone a tiny island o the coast o Europe, had ever seen.Labor relations were poor, as companies struggled to save everypenny they could, oten at the expense o their workorce’s paycheck, and the only uture that was mapped out or the children being born in
