2.1 Introduction
It is very essential that all the Wheels of a Vehicle are completely balanced otherwise there will
be bubbling of wheel and this will affect the steering control. Similarly, if the wheel alignment
of a vehicle is out of order, the rubbing of tyres will be more and free movement of wheels also
gets affected. This result into rapid wear of tyre treads. To overcome these problems,
computerized Wheel Balancing and Wheel Alignment machines are used. These machines are
fully automatic, very accurate, quick and precise in their work.

2.2 Market Potential

There is a very good market potential for the computerized wheel balancing and wheel
alignment workshop. Now a day, these workshops are very common in urban areas, and
suitable for all passenger cars, light trucks and motorcycles (with special flange in case of wheel
balancing). With the decline in passenger car prices and availability of easy finance for
passenger and commercial vehicles, the demand for such computerized workshops is rapidly
increasing coinciding with increase in number of vehicles.

2.3 Basis and Presumptions

1. The rental value of the workshop has been taken at prevailing rates.

2. The cost of machinery and equipment indicated in the Profile refers to a particular make and
prices are approximate to those prevailing at the time of preparation of the Project Profile.

3. The provision made in respect of consumables, personnel, and overhead etc., has been made
at the prevailing rates and are approximate only.

4. The labor charges are based upon those prevailing in local market.

3.1 Introduction
We will deal with the sale of new tyres by different companies such as Bridgestone, Apollo,
Michelin, etc. Once a person comes and buys it we will provide him with free nitrogen fill-up in
that tyre if he wants in others than per tyre would be charged.

Nitrogen filler by Parker US Company Machine name Tyre saver and an automatic tyre changer
which does not affect the rim while changing and cleaning up of tyres as done manually by
tools.

Then comes wheel balancing, even a new tyre needs to be balanced by the use of small weighs.
They would be of free of charge at the time of purchase. Then whenever tyres are replaced
normally the alignments need to be made which would be charged per visit. And this will not
only target new customers but also every person who gets his car aligned. The alignment
machine has an advantage of being a new technology in town and with more of accuracy.
(Visualiner by John Beam).

We would also come up with various AMC Annual maintenance charges which would include
nitrogen fill-ups, balancing and alignments. This will not only increase profitability but also
customer’s retention and could help in building faith in customer.

It is very essential that all the wheels of a vehicle completely balanced and aligned with each
other as far as possible. If these are not properly balanced, the dynamic forces are set in
motion. These forces increase the load on bearings, stress on various members of vehicle,
unpleasant and dangerous vibrations in members of vehicle.

Besides, when the wheels of a vehicle are not properly aligned, the free movement of
wheels gets obstructed and tyres start bubbling, which results into lesser life for tyres. These
machines display fault on screen automatically and are equipped with automatic self-check,
users’ friendly calibration and protection in wheel clamping.

The symptoms of a car that is out of alignment are:

 Uneven or rapid tire wear

 Pulling or drifting away from a straight line

 Wandering on a straight level road

 Spokes of the steering wheel off to one side while driving on a straight and level road.
17
Page
The symptoms of a wheel that is out of balance are:

 Vibration in the steering wheel at certain highway speeds.

 Vibration in the seat or floorboard at certain highway speeds.
 Scalloped or cupped wear pattern on the tires

Wheel Alignment:
To find out if there is need of wheel alignment, first each tire is checked and uneven wear
patterns are observed. The problem with this method, however, is that if we can see a wear
pattern like the ones listed below, it may be too late to save that tire. This is why it is a good
idea to have wheel alignment checked periodically.

 If the tread is deeper on the edges than in the center, the tire is over inflated.
 If the tread is deeper in the center than the edges, the tire is under inflated.
 If the tread is deeper on one side than the other, the wheel alignment must be checked
soon.
 We Run hand back and forth across the tread, being careful not to cut hand on any
debris or exposed steel belt wire. If the tread is smooth in one direction, but jagged in
the other we have what is called a "saw-tooth" wear pattern which is caused by a toe-in
problem. Have the alignment checked as soon as possible as this condition causes rapid
tire wear.

3.2 Working Process
1. Wheel balancing
The machine is fully automatic. The wheel is to be loaded on turn table for balancing and sensor
holders are attached to it. All front and rear wheel values for the measured value printout are
calculated in a single wheel alignment run. Cordless remote control is provided with machine to
enable the operator to operate the machine from the steering wheel. In these machines,
normally there is a castor like adjustment and simultaneous display of castor, camber and toe
readings on computer screen. The alignment data’s are displayed in figures and also in graphic
form on screen.

Wheel Balancer

19

During the mounting process, proper lubrication is a must. Both top and bottom beads must be
lubricated with an approved tire lubricant. If the beads do not seat at 40 psi, the installer must
Page

break the entire assembly down and re-lubricate the bead areas.
2. Wheel aligning
Granted, a state-of-the-art computerized wheel alignment system will walk a technician
through the steps, perform all necessary calculations and instruct the technician to adjust
angles in order to meet an OE specification for a specific production vehicle. However, it's also
important to understand wheel angles and what these angles represent in terms of drivability,
braking, tire wear and handling.

A number of dimensional angles are involved in wheel alignment theory, but only three are
considered adjustable. These are wheel toe, camber and caster.

Wheel Toe
Wheel toe describes the relationship of the right and left wheels on the same axle, as viewed
from overhead. It’s measured by comparing the distance between the centers of the front of
the tires to a distance between the centers of the rear of the tires on the same axle.

Toe-out (negative toe) is present when the wheels are farther apart in front of the axle
centerline and closer together behind it. Toe-in (positive toe) is when the two wheels on the
same axle are closer together at the front and wider apart at the rear. When the measured
distance between the fronts of the wheels (ahead of the steering axle centerline) is identical to
the distance between the wheels behind the axle centerline, the condition is called zero toe.

All front suspensions, regardless of design, feature toe angle adjustment, at a location on the
steering tie rods or tie rod ends. Live rear axles feature no toe angle adjustment, but
independent rear suspensions usually do offer the feature.

The toe angle affects the directional control of a vehicle; turning response and tire tread life.
Toe-related tread wear will cause a feathering wear pattern across the tread. With too much
toe-in, the feathering will angle inward, toward the center of the vehicle; too much toe-out
causes feathering that angle outward.

Because of the compliance in control arm bushings and other dynamic variances in suspension
and steering systems, the goal is to establish a static toe angle that will result in a zero toe
condition when the vehicle is driven in a straight line.

Speaking in general terms, a rear-drive vehicle would likely require a front wheel toe-in
(positive) setting, and a front-drive vehicle would likely require a slight toe-out (negative)
setting. This is because commonly, as a rear-drive vehicle moves forward, the front wheels tend
to try to push outward (to crawl away from each other); and a front-drive vehicles front wheels
tend to try to crawl inward.
20
Page
Camber

As viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle, camber refers to the "lean" of the wheel from
top to bottom. A wheel that leans outward at the top (compared to true vertical) has positive
camber. One that leans inward at the top has negative camber. If the wheel is oriented in a true
vertical, it's called zero camber.

Camber must always be adjusted to maximize the tread contact patch based on the
driving requirements. In most cases, OE specifications will recommend a slightly positive or zero
camber to maximize tire wear and traction, and to provide easier steering and greater
resistance to directional darting in a straight line.

If the wheel features a static negative camber angle (vehicle sitting idle), this places
more tread load at the road surface on the inner shoulder and tread area. Negative camber is
regularly employed on performance vehicles (especially race cars on road courses) in order to
increase the tire contact patch during hard turns. Since lateral loading (when a car goes into a
hard turn) will try to push the top of the inside tire outward, an adequate negative camber
angle may be dialed in to compensate for this. So, while the front wheels may display negative
camber as the vehicle rolls light, when it goes into a hard turn, ie wheel facing the direction of
the turn will try to "straighten up," achieving maximum tread contact with the road. If camber
isn't sufficiently negative, this tire would lean too far, causing the inside of the tread to lift and
placing excess stress and load only on the outside of the tread and outer shoulder.

The measuring process in these machines is normally automatic. After the wheel data is
entered by potential meters and the machine started, the measuring run is made automatically
until the wheel comes to a stand-still at the point to be balanced. The degree of precision for
measurements is determined fine, medium or average. The data of rim width, rim diameter,
distance can be stored in the machine along with the method of compensation (weight). The
computer automatically runs the standard program for the two side balancing using hammer on
weights. Special programs for other type of balancing are also possible in the machine. The size
of the weight required and the attachment point are calculated exactly and stored by the
computer.

3. Tyre Fitting/Changing
The manual swing arm design uses one control to adjust horizontal tool head position and a
second control to adjust vertical height. The 1.5 HP air drive system allows fast and powerful
control of the wheel under heavy loads while still allowing the user infinite control of wheel
movement. The bead loosener features three support blocks for greater control of wheel.
Precise internal or external clamping ensures proper placement of wheel on tabletop.

4. Nitrogen Filling

We can use nitrogen, not just air, to fill tyres with the new Nitrogen Tyre Inflation System. A
revolutionary technology in tyre inflation. We can gain a competitive edge by enhanced tyre
pressure retention. Bringing tyre inflation and, in turn, travel to a new level. Creating a new
source of revenue for your business while improving tyre performance, road safety and cost
savings for your customers.

Better air pressure retention. The single biggest reason for tyre failure is poorly maintained
tyre pressure. In fact, 54 percent of all vehicles on the road have low tyre pressure. Oxygen in
compressed air can permeate the tyre wall reducing tyre pressure. With nitrogen, diffusion is
30 to 40 percent slower than oxygen. As a result, nitrogen maintains tyre pressure longer than
air.

Enhanced fuel economy. Maintaining tyre pressure can boost fuel economy by up to 6 percent.
This is due to two factors, reduced rolling resistance from proper tyre pressure and reduced
heat in the tyres. Nitrogen disperses heat more quickly than ambient air, thus minimizing heat
build-up in tyres and enhancing fuel efficiencies.

Longer tread life. With quicker heat dispersion, you get a cooler running tyre which helps
extend tread life and reduce tyre failure. Nitrogen also prevents oxidation which can not only
lead to tread separation and belt failure but, when combined with moisture, corrode rims. In
fact, moisture can result in rust flakes that can fall into the valve stem, block the valve and
cause under-pressurization. It can even cause the valve stem itself to rust.

Slow chemical aging. Filling a tyre with nitrogen also significantly slows the chemical aging
process of the tyres rubber components. This leads to fewer catastrophic failures like blowouts.
Slower aging lengthens tyre core life, which yields extra retreads and lower fleet costs.

Nitrogen Filling Process

1. The valve stem cap is unscrewed. (Some tires have two valves: one for air and one for
nitrogen.)
2. The tire pressure gauge is hold over the open valve to test the current pressure. The
tire gauge is removed after a few seconds and look at the reading.
3. The air compressor is powered on and the valve is checked to be sure it will fit.
4. The mouth of the nitrogen air compressor is fitted over the open tire valve and is
pressed down carefully to force nitrogen into the tire. Keep holding the compressor
on the valve for 15 seconds.
5. The tire gauge is placed on the valve to see if the tire is now filled to capacity. If not, c
nitrogen is added in 15-second intervals. If the tire is satisfactorily filled, the valve cap
23

is replaced and the air compressor is turned off.

Project Plan

27
Page
4.1 Introduction
Our project plan basically works on the basis of year on year increase in sales and thus profit.

Year I

All the machinery, wheel alignment machine, wheel balancing machine, nitrogen filler machine, air
compressor, tyre changer, pneumatic gun and lift post, will be put into place at the start up itself
because all these are interrelated. Wheel balancing and wheel alignment machine go hand in hand so
they have to be implemented together. We are planning to provide free nitrogen filling to people who
come for wheel alignment and balancing as an incentive and also for creating awareness in people about
the benefit of nitrogen filling in tyres instead of normal air and thus inturn also promoting it. Wheel
alignment and balancing are a major source of our profits because after the initial investments, there is
not much variable cost associated with it.

Tyres and alloys will also be provided first up because we expect to draw people coming for wheel
alignment and balancing towards the tyres and alloys we have and their better efficiency and aesthetic
values. Since we are planning to build our shop near the distributors of the tyres and alloys (available
locally) so we are planning to keep inventory at the economic order quantity level. The inventory will be
just sufficient to fulfill a short term demand and any further requirements will be fulfilled by taking the
material from the distributors.

Our target market in case of tyres would be people looking for replacement of the original ones, as
according to our observation, most of the people will not go to buy the tyres from the company
showrooms the second time due to the cost factor and most of them will not initially come to change
