THE WAR OF 1812
The conflicts with Great Britain len many in the eastern United States believing that only war withtheEuropeanscouldprotecttheirtradingrights.Mennwhile, settlersonthefrontierblamed the British lor encouraging the Native Americans to resist westward expansion. Thus. people in boththe West and the East were calling tor war. Political leaders who wanted "vaT included men like Senators John C. Calhoun of South Carolina and Henry Clay of Kentucky. These leaders were known as War Hawks. They advocated war with Great Britain because much of theirsout~crnandwesternterritoriesiayalollgthcrrontierandfaced constant threats from British force. and Native Americans. In addition to protecting trading rights and western settlements. these leaders hoped that the war would produce landg ains for the US in both British Canada and Spanish Florida (Spain was an ally of Grear Britain atthc time). Finally, on June 18, 1812, Congress declared war on Great Britain
IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE WAR OF 1812 (1812 -1814) BattleofHorseshoeBend(March 27, 1814). With the help of the Cherokee nation. Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) defeated Britain's Native American ally in the South, the Creeks. The victory also served 100PCll lip the Southwest 10 white settlement.
Key terms - embedded and bolded within the text, and listed in each
chapter review.
The Treaty of Ghent (December 24,1814). This treaty ended the war whhcut presenting any realgains fer either side. It basically returned 10 each side the territory it had possesscdbeforcthebegillilingofhostilitics and said nothing about the impressment of sailors orrhe rights of'vneutrals "
Battle of New Orleans (January 8, 1815). Unaware that 3 ncaty had been signed ending the war, the Bartle of New Orleans was actually fought after the war had tecbnicallyended. Andrew Jackson's troops. though greatly outnumbered, defeated the British. The US forces suffered only 8 deaths while the British suffered over 700. The victory gave pcop le in the US great pride and made Andrew Jackson a national hero.
CONSEQUENCES OF THE WAR OF 1812 The War of 1812 had several key consequences
• The US and Great Britain agreed to return their land boundaries to where they were before the war.
• The United States' nbiluy to defend itselfwon the respect and r ecognirion of'omer
nations.
• Feelings of US nattouausm (devotion to one's country] grew stronger.
• The Federalist Party lost its credibility and eventually disbanded
• The US manufacturing industry grew due to the lack of'munufacurred goods from Britain during the war. As a result. the US became more self sufficient.
Frequent practice exercises allow for student benchmarking as they progress through the chapters.

Virtual Math Tutor
created and narrated by Dr. Jonathan Lewin a product of Jonathan Lewin's Math Movies
American Book Company is pleased to present the brand new Virtual Math Tutor v3.0 by Dr. Jonathan Lewin, a Professor of Mathematics at Kennesaw State University in Georgia with more than 40 years of teaching experience. Separated into two libraries, The Basics of Algebra and Analytic Geometry and Trigonometry, Virtual Math Tutor contains 6S movies with a combined playing time of about SS hours. These movies take you into a virtual classroom where you will feel as though you are attending a real lecture with an instructor.
Virtual Math Tutor also contains detailed solutions of about 900 exercises. A great advantage of the Virtual Math Tutor movies over a real lecture is that you can pause, rewind, or fast forward a movie. Also, with a single mouse click in its table of contents, you can jump to any item you wish to see within a movie. Virtual Math Tutor covers a wide variety of topics ranging from beginning to advanced algebra, some elementary analytic geometry (coordinates, distance formula, lines and slopes, circle graphs), a complete course in trigonometry and a variety of elementary topics on relations and functions.
New in Version 3.0: Version 3.0 of Virtual Math Tutor comes with a new group called Relations and Functions, and it comes with an expanded form of the Virtual Math Tutor Companion which provides the source material of the Virtual Math Tutor movies in document form. The companion includes complete solutions of all of the exercises and also provides the lists of exercises in worksheet documents
I
wifhout fheir solutions so that you can try the exercises on
your own. Virtual Math Tutor 3.0 is available for installation to your hard drive in DVD format. Virtual Math Tutor v3.0 is the perfect learning resource for students and teachers alike!

Educational Dynamix, a provider of innovative programs that fulfill "No Child Left Behind" guidelines, has developed Musical Mathematics.
hildren are motivated to learn when they enjoy what they are doing. The songs of Musical Mathematics allow instructors to add energy and excitement to math lessons through singing and active engagement.
Because children love music and are naturally drawn to rhythm, the Musical Mathematics series uses children's innate appreciation of music to help increase their knowledge of mathematical content.
The Musical Mathematics audio CD contains mathematically-themed songs - filled with rhythm and spirit - to teach children the mathematical concept of "skip counting:'
Several genres of music spanning numerous cultures and rhythmic experiences allow for diverse and effective methods of teaching math concepts that help promote learning and memory.
Each of the songs on the CD were written and performed by singer/songwriter Liz Robinson accompanied by a choir of children.
