Q: Design an experiment to investigate the effect of total surface area

on the rate of diffusion.

7. Procedure:

a) Potato is cut into cubes which is 1cm3, 8 cm3, 27cm3, 64 cm3

b) Each potato is placed in a beaker containing coloured water (red)
for 20 minutes.
c) After 20 minutes, the potato cubes are cut into halves
d) The outer surface of the potato cubes are dried using a filter paper
e) The transparency sheet is placed on the top of cut surface
f) The area that is stained red is drawn and shaded on the grided
transparency.
g) Coloured area in each potato cubes is measured /estimated in
percentage (%) by using a grided transparency
h) The percentage of coloured area in each potato cube is calculated and
recorded

a) Chose Lemna sp. of the same size.

b) Label three Petri dishes as A, B and C.
c) Pour 4 ml of distilled water into Petri dish A, 4ml of hydrochloric into
Petri dish B, and 4 mi of sodium hydroxide solution into Petri dish C
d) Test the pH value of each solution using pH paper ,record in the table.
e) Pour 5ml of pond water into each of Petri dishes
f) Put 5 Lemna sp into petri dish
g) Place the petri dish near the window in a laboratory
h) Change the solution on petri dishes everyday.
i) Count the number of Lemna sp. after 5 days
j) Calculate the population of growth rate of Lemna sp.
k) Repeat the step 1 a – j to get the average result
l) Count and record the result.
