n pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate iscovered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid.[1] Theartist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etchingneedle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece,so exposing the bare metal. The échoppe, a tool with aslanted oval section is also used for "swelling.
Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleumsometimes mounted on a wooden block is usedfor the relief surface. A design is cut into thelinoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shapedchisel or gouge, with the raised un carved areasrepresenting a reversal mirror image of the partsto show printed. The linoleum sheet is inkedwith a roller called a brayer, and then impressedonto paper or fabric. The actual printing can bedone by hand or with a press.
