Why were members of the Echo Park HolidayCommittee camping out at the Echo Park FarmersMarket every Friday since August 3rd? They wereholding court for our future artists, the children of EchoPark, who were drawing pictures depicting the theme ofthe Echo Park Holiday Parade, Visions ofHoliday Joy.The children arrived with their parentsat the Farmers Market, saw the Echo ParkHoliday Parade Committee table andgleefully picked their chairs, crayons andstarted drawing. During their shorts visitsto the Farmers Market, onlookers saw thechildren engaged with one another, sharing crayons, talking with eachanother, having a wonderful time. Some children were chatty, othersquiet, but one thing they all had incommon was the beautiful smiles on their faces whenthey completed their art work. One could see theconcentration the children put into their work; one 4year old was so upset that he was unable to draw whatwas in his mind that he had a fit.Holiday Parade Committee members encouragedthe child to try again; he did and from then on he lookedforward to coming to the Farmer's Market every Fridayto draw. The mothers said the children eagerly awaited goingto the Farmer’s Market on Fridays where they drew whiletheir mothers bought fresh produce and afterwards theyall went together tothe park. The members ofthe Echo ParkHoliday Paradesaid so long totheir little friendsat the FarmersMarket onSeptember 28th,but look forward toseeing them againfor the Echo ParkHoliday Parade Kick-off on Friday November 30th, at6:30pm at the Boat House, and then again at theParade itself on Saturday, December 8th, at 12:00pm -3:00pm on Sunset Blvd. The Echo Park Holiday Parade Committee inviteseveryone to save these dates for Visions of Holiday Joy, -The Echo Park Holiday Parade.

Larry Pickens, member of the Greater EchoPark Elysian Neighborhood Council GoverningBoard and a long-time resident of Echo Park, unexpectedly passed away at his home on LemoyneStreet on Saturday, September 22
nd
. He was in hisearly fifties.A popular member of the Council, Larry hadbeen re-elected regularly since its inception in2002. He brought not only his warm and friendlypersonality to the board, but also years ofexperience in public service.Larry worked at the Silverlake field office forLos Angeles City Councilmember Jackie Goldbergduring her term of office in the nineteen-nineties,where his was the always welcoming face at thefront desk.Earlier Larry had been the office coordinatorand facilitator for the well-regarded after-schoolenrichment program known as LACER. Larrycoordinated the programs for Hollywood juniorhigh schools King, Le Conte, Washington Irving andBancroft and for Fairfax and Hollywood highschools. As a social worker for one of L.A.’s residentialfacilities, Larry made an effort to increaseresidents’ cultural awareness with programs onsubjects as diverse as Filipino culture andearthquake preparation.Previously Larry held a position in the medicalfield at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, and, as ayouth, had been seen on TV dancing on the show“Soul Train”.Larry grew up in Los Angeles in a close-knitfamily with many brothers and sisters. Later heand his partner Jeff Horton had two sons, Dante, now 18 years old, and Lorenzo, 15. The boys werethe highlights of his life, according to friends.Larry and Jeff’s family lived on one of EchoPark’s streets where the north and south boundlanes occupy different levels, separated by a bare, sloping median strip. A couple of years ago Larryorganized the neighbors to install irrigation and tolandscape the median with a variety of plants, successfully beautifying the block.Another of Larry’s neighborhood projects wasthe family’s yearly Halloween show, when heopened up the garage as a stage for the local kidsto put on skits and entertainment, always endingthe evening with generous candy hand-outs.Although in October 2005 the family’s homeburned nearly to the ground, Larry and Jeff setabout re-building bigger, better -– and safer — thanever. They were living in the new house at the timeof Larry’s death.A memorial service will be held on October 6that Inglewood Park Cemetery, followed by acelebration at Larry and Jeff's home. Donationsmay be made to the United Negro College Fund.
