thirty-five or forty years since its last opening.
The Elysian Therapeutic Recreation Center
is the first of three city recreation centers that
the city modified to be fully accessible to dis-
abled children. Among its features are a play-
ground where kids in wheelchairs can easily
have fun in the sandbox and a basketball court
designed for their needs.
Like most recreation centers, the building,
which dates back to the fifties, includes a gym
with a raised stage. Unlike the stages at other
centers, however, the back of this stage was
designed to open directly to the outdoors,
where semi-circular rows of wooden benches
slope gently up to the trees and greenery of

Sign up now for this year’s Christmas Bird Count --

Be part of the Echo Park Lake Team

Sunday, January 4, 2009

Meet 8:00 a.m. at the Echo Park Boathouse
(Echo Park Ave. near Laguna Ave.)
Rain or Shine!
The Lake is a rest and refueling stop for many migratory birds, including cormo-
rants, ring-necked ducks, American wigeons, blue herons, great egrets, Canada geese,
several kinds of gulls and other winter migrants. We also count the resident birds, such
as Mallards, coots, doves, and others. Over the years, we’ve counted more than 60 dif-
ferent species.
This is the 109th annual Christmas Bird Count. Over 50,000 volunteers across
North America, Central America, the Caribbean and the Pacific take part to help deter-
mine the health and diversity of local and migratory bird populations. The Echo Park
Lake team is one of many fielded by the Los Angeles Audubon Society, which compiles
all the local figures and sends them to the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, which
does the master tally.
Beginners are welcome. Bring your binocs. Participation fee: $5.00
Meet at the Boathouse, Echo Park Ave. near Laguna Avenue, Los Angeles
Directions:
From N/B 101 Freeway, exit Echo Park Avenue and continue north about ½ mile to the
