Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Office of Workforce Information and Performance 1100 N. Eutaw Street Baltimore, MD 24201 Maryland's Market Stalls During July © Amid reports of uncertainties in financial markets, dectining consumer confidence and spending and lackluster hiring at the national level, Maryland's economic recovery faltered in July. © Following seasonal adjustment, the numberof jobs on Maryland's industry payrolls was ite changed, rising by just 500 over-the-month, The increase, while marginal, is nonetheless encouraging considering that national payrolls have dectined over the last two months. © Tho shaving of about 3,400 temporary Census positions was a major crag on Marylane's business activity during July, oversttadowing the uplums reported in select private sector Industries, © Education/Health Care/Social Assistance was the primary focus of private sector expansion in July, advancing by 8,200 jobs. A gain of 1,600 jobs in trade/transportation/utities was also reported, raising employment in this business sector above its year ago total forthe first time since September 2007. © Marylanc’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.1 percent in July — more thar two full percentage points below that of 9.5 percent reported nationally. © Job growth, although slowing, has proceeded without interruption over the past five months. Since the upswing began in the February to March period, Marylend’s economy has clearly made substantial progress, adding just over 53,000 jobs to industry payrolls. (Feb 2010 2478.1 — July 2010 2531.2) Growth, however, has been uneven and we can expect, in the months ahead, fo face an uphill struggle in trying t6 regain the jobs lost during the downturn and to return to the peak employment level of February 2008 (2,617,400 jobs).
