Bubonic plagueis the best knownmanifestation of the Plague causedby the Gram-negative bacteriumYersinia pestis (formerly known asPasteurella pestis). It belongs tothe family Enterobacteriaciae. Theterm bubonic plague is derivedfrom the Greek word bubo, meaning"swollen gland". Swollen lymphnodes (buboes) especially occur inthe armpit and groin in personssuffering from bubonic plague.
 
Bubonic plague was often usedsynonymously for plague, but itdoes in fact refer specifically toan infection that enters throughthe skin and travels through thelymphatic, as is often seen in flea-borne infections. The bubonicplague kills about two out ofthree of infected patients in 2²6days without treatment. It mayhave been the cause of the BlackDeath that swept through Europein the 14th century and killedmore than 25 million people, onethird of the European population
