Greetings Brothers and Sisters!
This month is going to be a very important month in the life of our church! Financial Report 2

Caring and Sharing 2

One reason October will be important is because it is Pumpkin Patch month. This
month we will receive two shipments of pumpkins, transform our side yard into a Parish Nurse 3
beautiful orange wonderland, as well as have the opportunity to interact with our com- Pumpkin Patch 6
munity on a grand scale. People will come from all over to get their pumpkins from

the “Pumpkin Patch” church. This pumpkin patch is more than just a fundraiser for 5, 7
this church...this is a ministry. Calendar 8

It is a ministry because we are helping to provide not only a meeting place for families
to spend time together, we are going to be the foundation for some wonderful family
memories to be made. Memories that will greatly impact many children and their
families. Last year I remember a mom and her daughter that pulled up in the patch
around noon time. As they got out I noticed the mom had a basket in her hands, a pic-
nic basket. That mother and her daughter had come to the patch for lunch. They say
there for about an hour, eating, laughing, and creating a memory that those two will 10/01 Terri Silvola-Finch
carry around for the rest of their lives. Our pumpkin patch helped to provide the loca- 10/09 John Battin
tion for that memory. They could have gone anywhere for their lunch together, but 10/13 Jennifer Foster
they chose to come to our pumpkin patch. Our pumpkin patch creates a very magnetic Melva Sanon
atmosphere, a fantasy land mentality almost. And people, from all over, are drawn to 10/16 Sharron Tryon
it. This “getaway” that we help provide is a ministry. We have the opportunity to 10/18 Roman Kulwich
show these people the love of God, by treating them with respect, with kindness, and 10/22 Linda Boddy
with a whole bunch of smiles. This is our opportunity to show them, through the 10/23 Joyce Clayton
memories they make and they cheerfulness of their interactions with us, how much 10/24 Dot Jones
God loves them. What a blessing! 10/27 Randy Leighton
10/28 Florence LaVine
It is also a ministry because we get the opportunity to strengthen ourselves as the body
10/29 Kristopher
of Christ. It is also the month that will require much work from all of us, but will also

provide us with a hefty amount of fun! We will all get to have more opportunities for

Les Krouse
you do not know very well. Maybe you learn something about a dear friend that you

never knew before. Maybe you get to encourage and uplift a member of your church

family. All of those are incredible opportunities for ministry among ourselves.
I want to share a story with you that has been around for a very long time. It is about
how Christians are like pumpkins. "[Being a Christian] It is like being a pumpkin.
God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then
he cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt,
hate, greed, etc., and then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of 10/07 Lori & Dan Geer
you to shine for all the world to see." 10/29 Ruth & Brad Fuller
Folks, we are privileged to get to show that light off this month. We are honored to be
trusted by God to show that light off this month. We all have the light. Be proud of
the light, grow your light, and share the light. This is going to be a very important
month in the life of Druid Hills. Let's make it GREAT!
Blessings,
Pastor Daryl

PARISH NURSE NEWSLINE

Joyce Baugher, R.N., Parish Nurse
Asparagus is good for you
Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called histones, which are believed to be active in controlling cell growth.
For that reason, I believe asparagus can be said to contain a substance that I call cell growth normalizer. That accounts
for its action on cancer & in acting as a general body tonic. In any event, regardless of theory, asparagus used as we sug-
gest, is a harmless substance. The FDA cannot prevent you from using it & it may do you much good. It has been re-
ported by the US National Cancer Institute, that asparagus is the highest tested food containing glutathione, which is
considered one of the body’s most potent anti-carcinogens & antioxidants. The suggested daily amount is 2-4 table-
spoons twice a day. It can be fresh or canned. You can make it into a puree & add water or juice, drink warm or cold. Or
just enjoy it as a vegetable.

MEMORIAL GIFTS
The Memorial Committee is appreciative of the gifts given to Druid Hills UMC in memory of Anna Ganley. We thank
the following for their loving tribute made in her honor. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Grieves and “The Focus” Sunday School class.

crafts, swam & many other things. This is such a marvelous learning opportunity for him. We want to be sure everyone
know how much this means to him.
Thank you all so very much.

PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS!

News from Roy
The pumpkins are coming!!!! We expect our first delivery on Saturday, October 9th at 9 AM and we need everyone who
is able to help unload. Remember some lifting is required. HOWEVER, we have lots of jobs for those unable to lift, so
come and have fun and enjoy some refreshments. We also need sellers and story tellers, sign-up at the Connection sta-
tion. This is the church’s fundraiser and let’s all be part of it. The second load will arrive October 18th at 5 PM. There
will be a Pumpkin Patch workday on Wednesday, October 6th at 9 AM.

News from Lucy

The pumpkins are coming! The pumpkins are coming! And so are the kids! And we need story tellers! The pumpkins
will arrive on October 9th, and the stories will start on October 18th. Every year we host preschoolers and kindergarteners
from all over Marion County. They come between 9:30 and 11:30 am. We read stories to them and they play in the
patch. This is one of the most rewarding events at the Pumpkin Patch. A lot of these kids have never been to a patch,
they’ve never sat on a hay bale and a lot of them have never seen a “Little Red Wagon”. We provide the books and you
provide the voice. If this is a ministry you would enjoy, please contact Terri Silvola-Finch at 369-0614.

“DID YOU KNOW….”

One of the funds we support is the Ministerial Education Fund, which helps to send women and men to seminary for a
theological education. Did you know, each annual conference keeps 25 percent of the receipts that help provide re-
sources to support candidates for ministry, continuing education for pastors & recruitment of clergy, as well as funding
for the probationary process.

ONLINE NEWSLETTER
Many of us have been looking for ways to save money and resources. One method the leadership of the church has come
up with is to offer our church's monthly newsletter, The Sunshine Herald, online. By offering this online we save money
on the price per page for every copy made and postage to mail those that need it, and resources, the paper we use to print
the newsletter with. I have found a free program that allows me to host and publish the newsletter on my blog. This pro-
gram will allow you to see the newsletter in full screen, and go through it by scrolling the pages, flipping the pages like a
book, or just seeing it one page at a time. You can also print it out at your home or download it to your computer to view
any time you wish. And all of this is free to you and the church.

By no means are we eliminating the printing of the newsletter. If you would still like a print copy of the newsletter each
month you do not have to do a thing. However, if you like to begin receiving the newsletter online only, please contact
the church office. For every family that goes online only, the church will save roughly a $1.00 per year. Not only can
those savings be significant but the reduced use of paper is a benefit for all of us!

Blessings! - Pastor Daryl
