Students, staff and faculty increasingly connect to the campusdata network via the Internet. The need to access universityresources is likely to increase dramatically with theimplementation of projects such as Sakai, and VPN servicesappear to offer solutions to related remote access requirements.Additionally, VPN services provide a secure method of improvingremote access to licensed material and other university resourcesrestricted to systems assigned a campus IP address. The workgroup examined available VPN technology and believesthat SSL VPN solutions reflect a cost-effective and capable VPNsolution for UC Davis. The workgroup recommends Informationand Educational Technology prepare a Request for Informationfor an SSL VPN solution. As part of the RFI process, theworkgroup further recommends that IET perform a pilot test usingSSL VPN solution(s) that meet RFI specifications to ensureproduct conformity with our requirements for infrastructure andcampus unit services and performance. The result of examination and successful testing should be aRequest for Quote that permits a phased implementation basedon campus size, but that does not make a commitment beyond aninitial implementation level that includes current library proxyusers and those users who are denied access to universityresources due to network source address restrictions.
